  • The GhEB1C gene was found to enhance the growth of trichomes and root structures in Arabidopsis thaliana, and its function is influenced by specific amino acids and interactions with other proteins.
  • Silencing GhEB1C in cotton impacted fiber development and related gene expression, indicating that it could be a key target for genetic improvement of cotton fiber length through breeding techniques.

Article Abstract

Cotton is the most economically important natural fiber crop grown in more than sixty-five countries of the world. Fiber length is the main factor affecting fiber quality, but the existing main varieties are short in length and cannot suit the higher demands of the textile industry. It is necessary to discover functional genes that enable fiber length improvement in cotton through molecular breeding. In this study, overexpression of GhEB1C in Arabidopsis thaliana significantly promotes trichomes, tap roots, and root hairs elongation. The molecular regulation of GhEB1C involves its interactions with itself and GhB'ETA, and the function of GhEB1C regulation mainly depends on the two cysteine residues located at the C-terminal. In particular, the function activity of GhEB1C protein triggered with the regulation of protein phosphatase 2A, while silencing of GhEB1C in cotton significantly influenced the fiber protrusions and elongation mechanisms., Further, influenced the expression of MYB-bHLH-WD40 complex, brassinosteroids, and jasmonic acid-related genes, which showed that transcriptional regulation of GhEB1C is indispensable for cotton fiber formation and elongation processes. Our study analyzed the brief molecular mechanism of GhEB1C regulation. Further elucidated that GhEB1C can be a potential target gene to improve cotton fiber length through transgenic breeding.

Background: Tractography allows the in vivo study of subcortical white matter, and it is a potential tool for providing predictive indices on post-operative outcomes. We aim at establishing whether there is a relation between cognitive outcome and the status of the inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus's (IFOF's) microstructure.

Methods: The longitudinal neuropsychological data of thirty young (median age: 35 years) patients operated on for DLGG in the left temporo-insular cortex along with pre-surgery tractography data were processed.

To rapidly acquire fiber phenotypic data for wood quality assessment, we used a portable NIR spectro-meter to collect spectral data in 100 individuals of at 18-year-old of 20 different provenances, and simultaneously collected wood cores. Wood basic density and the anatomical structure of wood fiber were measured. The standard normal variate (SNV), orthogonal signal correction (OSC), and multiplicative scatter correction (MSC) methods were used for spectral preprocessing, the competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS) method were used for wavelength selection, and the partial least squares regression (PLSR) model were established.

Conventional two-dimensional (2D) cardiomyocyte differentiation protocols create cells with limited maturity, which impairs their predictive capacity and has driven interest in three-dimensional (3D) engineered cardiac tissue models of varying maturity and scalability. Cardiac spheroids are attractive high-throughput models that have demonstrated improved functional and transcriptional maturity over conventional 2D differentiations. However, these 3D models still tend to have limited contractile and electrical maturity compared to highly engineered cardiac tissues; hence, we incorporated a library of conductive polymer microfibers in cardiac spheroids to determine if fiber properties could accelerate maturation.

This paper presents preliminary ecological data on the Cocco's lanternfish (Cocco, 1838) (Osteichthyes: Myctophidae) in the Central Mediterranean and its first records from the northern Ionian Sea. A total of 28 specimens of lantern fish were collected using an experimental trawl net between August and September 2023 in a depth range of 500-701 m in the northern Ionian Sea (central Mediterranean), as part of the MEDITS project. Their morphological traits, the presence and arrangement of photophores together with the otolith characteristics allowed the identification of these specimens as .

This study introduces a green approach to sample preparation by applying natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) to determine phthalates in carbonated soft drinks using high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detector (HPLC-DAD). The method employs hollow fiber-microporous membrane liquid-liquid microextraction combined with a 96-well plate system, utilizing fatty-acid-based DES in the pores of the membranes. This methodology substantially reduces the use of organic solvents, and its efficiency is comparable to or better than conventional methods.
