The increased occurrence of antibiotic resistance and the harmful use of pesticides are a major problem of modern times. A ban on the use of antibiotics as growth promoters in animal breeding has put a focus on the probiotics market. Probiotic food supplements are versatile and show promising results in animal and human nutrition. Chemical pesticides can be substituted by biopesticides, which are very effective against various pests in plants due to increased research. What these fields have in common is the use of spore-forming bacteria. The endospore-forming spp. belonging to this group offer an effective solution to the aforementioned problems. Therefore, the biotechnological production of sufficient qualities of such endospores has become an innovative and financially viable field of research. In this review, the production of different spp. endospores will be reviewed. For this purpose, the media compositions, cultivation conditions and bioprocess optimization methods of the last 20 years are presented and reflected.

Hybrid nonlinear plasmonic waveguides, characterized by a small mode area and large nonlinear susceptibility, present an intriguing and practical platform for the minimization of nonlinear photonic devices. Nevertheless, the intrinsic Ohmic loss associated with surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and modal dispersion imposes constraints on the effective interaction length and, consequently, the ultimate efficiency of nonlinear processes. In this study, we demonstrate an efficient second harmonic generation (SHG) within a hybrid plasmonic waveguide by leveraging SPP-like modes at the fundamental wave and photonic-like modes at the SHG under phase matching conditions.

Taking into account the available scientific information, including the technical information provided by the applicant country, this Scientific Opinion covers the plant health risks posed by the following commodities: , and graftwood, bare-root plants and rooted plants in pots up to 7 years old imported into the EU from the UK. A list of pests potentially associated with the commodities was compiled.

Introduction: The infections of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) associated with duodenoscopes during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) procedure have become a significant cause for concern, especially in fragile patients. While the clinical impacts of these infections are well-documented, their economic implications remain underexplored. This study assesses the incidence and economic burden of post-ERCP infections in Italy using an administrative database.

Since their discovery, CRISPR/Cas systems have significantly expanded the genetic toolbox, aiding in the exploration and enhanced production of natural products across various microbes. Among these, class 2 CRISPR/Cas systems are simpler and more broadly used, but they frequently fail to function effectively in many Streptomyces strains. In this study, we present an engineered class 1 type I CRISPR/Cas system derived from Streptomyces avermitilis, which enables efficient gene editing in phylogenetically distant Streptomyces strains.

Genetic competition can obscure the true merit of selection candidates, potentially leading to altered genotype rankings and a divergence between expected and actual genetic gains. Despite a wealth of literature on genetic competition in plant and animal breeding, the separation of genetic values into direct genetic effects (DGE, related to a genotype's merit) and indirect genetic effects (IGE, related to the effects of a genotype's alleles on its neighbor's phenotype) in linear mixed models is often overlooked, likely due to the complexity involved. To address this, we introduce gencomp, a new R package designed to simplify the use of (spatial-) genetic competition models in crop and tree breeding routines.
