Pharmaceuticals removal from aqueous solution by water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes): a comprehensive investigation of kinetics, equilibrium, and thermodynamics.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

January 2025

Grupo de Investigación Materiales Con Impacto (Mat&Mpac), Facultad de Ciencias Básicas, Universidad de Medellín, Carrera 87 No. 30-65, 050026, Medellín, Colombia.

This study shows the efficiency of WH-C450, an adsorbent obtained from water hyacinth (WH) biomass, in the removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) from aqueous solutions. The process involves calcination of WH at 450 °C to produce an optimal adsorbent material capable of removing up to 73% of SMX and maximum SMX adsorption capacity of 132.23 mg/g.

Background: Early literature on the Woven EndoBridge (WEB) device reported 80-90% adequate aneurysm occlusion but low complete occlusion (40-55%). It is uncertain whether residual or recurrent aneurysms require re-treatment to prevent future rupture.

Objective: To systematically review the literature to meta-analyze occlusion and complication rates after re-treatment of these aneurysms.

The Application of Machine Learning Algorithms to Predict HIV Testing in Repeated Adult Population-Based Surveys in South Africa: Protocol for a Multiwave Cross-Sectional Analysis.

JMIR Res Protoc

January 2025

South African Medical Research Council/University of Johannesburg Pan African Centre for Epidemics Research Extramural Unit, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Johannesburg, Johannesburg, South Africa.

Background: HIV testing is the cornerstone of HIV prevention and a pivotal step in realizing the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) goal of ending AIDS by 2030. Despite the availability of relevant survey data, there exists a research gap in using machine learning (ML) to analyze and predict HIV testing among adults in South Africa. Further investigation is needed to bridge this knowledge gap and inform evidence-based interventions to improve HIV testing.

Antimony (Sb) contamination in water resources poses a critical environmental and health challenge globally. Sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) are employed to reduce SO to S for removing Sb in a microbial electrolysis cell (MEC). Yet, the reduction efficiency of reducing SO and Sb(Ⅴ) through SRB remains relatively low, and the underlying mechanism remains elusive.

Anaerobic treatment of tapioca wastewater has a long processing time. This study aims to evaluate ethanol fermentation as an effective treatment of tapioca wastewater. Simulated tapioca wastewater with an average chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 6900 mg L was treated in a four-column anaerobic baffled reactor for 300 d.
