The binding between a fluorescent water-soluble Zn(II) complex of {2-[N-(2-hydroxyethylammonioethyl) imino methyl] phenol} and calf thymus DNA (ct-DNA) was investigated using spectroscopic techniques. The complex was prepared and identified by FT-IR, and H NMR spectroscopies. The significant changes in the absorption and the circular dichroism spectra of ct-DNA in the presence of the Zn(II) complex implied the interaction between the Zn(II) complex and ct-DNA. Upon addition of ct-DNA, the fluorescence emission intensity of the Zn(II) complex was increased and indicated the interaction between the Zn(II) complex and ct-DNA was occurred. The binding constant values (K) resulted from fluorescence spectra clearly showed the Zn(II) complex affinity to ct-DNA. The fluorescence studies also approved the static enhancement mechanism in the Zn(II) complex-DNA complexation process. The thermodynamic profile exhibited the exothermic and spontaneous formation of ct-DNA-Zn(II) complex system hydrogen bonds and van der Waals forces. The competitive fluorescence investigation by methylene blue (MB), and Hoechst 33258 demonstrated that the Zn(II) complex could replace the DNA-bound Hoechst and bind to the minor groove binding site in ct-DNA. The viscosity changes were negligible, representing the Zn(II) complex binding to DNA the groove binding mode. Molecular docking simulation affirmed that the Zn(II) complex is located in the minor groove of ct-DNA near the DG12, DA17, DA18, and DG16 nucleobases.

Metal-organic complexes with long afterglow luminescence have attracted extensive attention due to potential applications in display, sensing and information security. However, most of the metal-organic complex long afterglow materials reported so far are limited to the use of UV light as the excitation source, and the ambiguity of the structure-activity relationship makes the development of metal-organic complexes extremely limited. Herein, a series of metal-organic complexes with ultralong emission lifetime is constructed by coordination assembly of Zn(II) with three isomers.

-β, β-β' trifused porphyrins incorporating two distinct active methylene groups (MN = malononitrile and IND = 1,3-indanedione) and their corresponding metal complexes with Cu(II) and Zn(II) have been synthesized with good to excellent yields and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques and spectrometric methods. Single crystal X-ray analysis of the Zn(II) complex ZnTFPMB(MN) (where TFP = trifused porphyrin and MB = mono benzo) revealed a nonplanar 'armchair' type conformation with a twist angle of 24.10°.

Although significant progress has been made in the effective measurement of Zn(II), Аlizarin red S (ARS) was immobilized on polyethylene polyamine-modified polyacrylonitrile (PPF-1) via a new matrix. This approach allows the detection of low levels of Zn(II) ions in various water samples via preconcentrated atomic absorption spectrometry. The use of PPF-1 in a polymer matrix for zinc preconcentration presents several advantages over traditional sorbtion-spectroscopic methods, including reduced cost, high zinc recovery, increased sensitivity, and selectivity.

Sulfur nanoparticles (SNPs) and their composites are promising for heavy metal adsorption, yet current SNPs often lack surface S, leading to low affinity toward heavy metal and ease of aggregation. Here, we report a simple light-driven method for facile prepare SNPs with surfaces enriched with S and in-situ load them onto graphene oxide (GO) to fabricate GO-S composites. Under illumination, the O generated by photosensitizer phloxine B was able to oxidize S into elemental SNPs.

Zinc is an essential metal to living organisms, including corals and their symbiotic microalgae (Symbiodiniaceae). Both Zn(II) deprivation and overload are capable of leading to dysfunctional metabolism, coral bleaching, and even organism death. The present work investigated the effects of chemically defined Zn species (free Zn, ZnO nanoparticles, and the complexes Zn-histidinate and Zn-EDTA) over the growth of the dinoflagellates Symbiodinium microadriaticum, Breviolum minutum, and Effrenium voratum, and on the trypsin-like proteolytic activity of the hydrocoral Millepora alcicornis.
