Published: October 2024

The problem of SO pollution in industrial flue gas has brought great pressure to environmental governance. In this study, a new type of activated carbon fixed bed device was designed and built for flue gas desulfurization. The results showed that activated carbons (AC1-AC5) were microporous activated carbons with abundant functional groups on the surface, and the desulfurization performance was ranked as AC1 > AC2 > AC3 > AC4 > AC5. The specific surface area of AC1 was as high as 624.98 m/g, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 29.03 mg·g under the optimum reaction conditions. The Freundlich adsorption isotherm model and Bangham pore diffusion model are more suitable for describing the dynamic adsorption process of SO on AC1. Combined with thermodynamic research, it is shown that the adsorption process of SO is a spontaneous, exothermic, and chaotic reduction process, which is mainly a physical adsorption between single-layer adsorption and multi-layer adsorption. Finally, the desulfurization-washing regeneration cycle experiment results showed that the regeneration rate of AC1 increases with the washing time and washing temperature, up to 95%, which provides data reference for industrial application.

In this study, we report the modification of a monolithic γ-aluminum oxy-hydroxide (γ-AlOOH) aerogel with cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) using the sol-gel method via supercritical drying. The optimized 2% CNF (w/w) results in a monolithic CNF-γ-AlOOH that is amorphous in nature, along with C-C and C-O-C functional groups. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images of the as-synthesized CNF-γ-AlOOH showed CNF embedded in the γ-AlOOH aerogel.

Cost-Effective Synthesis of Carbazole-Based Nanoporous Organic Polymers for SO Capture.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

Sulfur dioxide (SO), a pervasive air pollutant, poses significant environmental and health risks, necessitating advanced materials for its efficient capture. Nanoporous organic polymers (NOPs) have emerged as promising candidates; however, their development is often hindered by high synthesis temperatures, complex precursors, and limited SO selectivity. Herein, we report a room-temperature, cost-effective synthesis of carbazole-based nanoporous organic polymers (CNOPs) using 1,3,5-trioxane and paraldehyde, offering a significant advancement over traditional Friedel-Crafts alkylation methods.

Anti-icing properties of polar bear fur.

Department of Physics and Technology, University of Bergen, Allegaten 55, Bergen 5007, Norway.

The polar bear () is the only Arctic land mammal that dives into water to hunt. Despite thermal insulation provided by blubber and fur layers and low Arctic temperatures, their fur is typically observed to be free of ice. This study investigates the anti-icing properties of polar bear fur.

Ofloxacin, a commonly prescribed antibiotic, raises serious environmental concerns due to its persistence in aquatic systems. This study offers new insights into the environmental behavior of ofloxacin and its interactions with carbon-based adsorbents with the aim of enhancing our understanding of its removal mechanisms via adsorption processes. Using a comprehensive computational approach, we analyzed the speciation, pK values, and solubility of ofloxacin across various pH conditions, accounting for all four microspecies, including the often-overlooked neutral form.

Investigation of the Impact of Thionine Functionalization on Magnetoelastic Sensor Performance.

ACS Appl Bio Mater

Departamento de Física, Universidade Federal de Viçosa, Viçosa, Minas Gerais 36570-900, Brasil.

This study investigates the functionalization of gold-coated magnetoelastic sensors with thionine molecules, focusing on resonance frequency shifts. The functionalization process was characterized by using Raman spectroscopy and analyzed via scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy, revealing the progressive formation of molecular clusters over time. Our results demonstrate that longer functionalization time leads to saturation of surface coverage and cluster formation, impacting the sensor's resonance frequency shifts.
