Subcapsular liver hematoma is a life-threatening complication of pregnancy. It is associated with preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome. We present the case of a 36-year-old Caucasian nulliparous woman who was diagnosed at 29 weeks and 6 days of gestation with mild preeclampsia. After brief hospitalization she was discharged. During a daily follow-up, at 31 weeks and 3 days of gestation, she complained of mild abdominal pain and blood tests revealed HELLP syndrome. The cervix was unripe. A healthy baby was delivered by emergency cesarean section. The following day, the patient complained of persistent abdominal pain, and at the same time the hepatic cytolysis worsened dramatically. A computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a significant subcapsular hematoma without any active bleeding or breach of Glisson's capsule. We treated the patient conservatively and she was discharged home 10 days after the diagnosis was made. The symptoms of subcapsular liver hematoma are non-specific. They include nausea, vomiting and epigastric pain, and pain in the right upper quadrant or shoulder. Biological analyses can show hepatic cytolysis, haemolysis and coagulation disorders. Medical imaging can confirm the diagnosis. The management of subscapular liver hematoma may depends on whether there is hemodynamic stability, active bleeding or breach of Glisson capsule's. If the patient is stable and in the absence of active bleeding, management should be purely symptomatic.

Hypochlorous acid can be employed as a biomarker for blood infection (such as sepsis) and tissue damage (such as drug-induced liver injury, DILI), and the diagnosis of tissue damage or blood infection can be achieved through the detection of hypochlorous acid in relevant biological samples. Considering the complex environment and the diverse interferences in living organisms and blood plasma, developing new detection methods for HClO with high signal-to-background ratios is particularly important, and it can improve the accuracy of detection and quality of imaging based on a higher contrast, which makes the detection of HClO clearer and more accurate. Here, based on the advantages of the NIR fluorescence/photoacoustic dual-modal probe, we reported a hypochlorous acid-activatable NIR fluorescence/photoacoustic dual-modal probe (NIRF-PA-HClO) based on the spirolactam ring-opening strategy in this paper.

Ammonia is a product of amino acid metabolism that accumulates in the blood of patients with liver cirrhosis, leading to neurotoxic effects and hepatic encephalopathy (HE). HE manifestations can range from mild, subclinical disturbances in cognition, or minimal HE (mHE) to gross disorientation and coma, a condition referred to as overt HE. Many blood-based biomarkers reflecting these neurotoxic effects of ammonia and liver disease can be measured in the blood allowing the development of new biomarkers to diagnose cirrhosis patients at risk of developing HE.
