A quantification model which uses standard X-ray spectra collected from bulk materials to determine the composition and mass thickness of single-layer and multilayer unsupported thin films is presented. The multivariate model can be iteratively solved for single layers in which each element produces at least one visible characteristic X-ray line. The model can be extended to multilayer thin films in which each element is associated with only one layer. The model may sometimes be solved when an element is present in multiple layers if additional information is added in the form of independent k-ratios or model assumptions. While the algorithm is suitable for any measured k-ratios, it is particularly well suited to energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry where the bulk standard spectra can be used to deconvolve peak interferences in the thin-film spectra. The algorithm has been implemented and made available in the Open Source application National Institute of Standards and Technology DTSA-II. We present experimental data and Monte Carlo simulations supporting the quantification model.

An electro- and optically favorable quaternary nanocomposite film was produced by solution-casting nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiO NPs) into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT/PSS). Based on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) observations, the synthesized NiO NPs have a cubic phase and a diameter between 10 and 45 nm. The complexity and interactions observed through XRD patterns, UV-visible spectra, and FTIR measurements suggest that the NPs are not just dispersed within the polymer matrix, but are interacting with it, leading to enhanced dielectric properties and AC electrical conductivity.

Elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray single crystal diffraction indicated that a novel metal-organic framework (Tb-MOF) designated as 0.5n[Hbpy]·[Tb(dpa)(HO)]·4nHO was synthesized successfully, (where Hdpa = 5-(3, 4-dicarboxy- phenoxy) isophenic acid, bpy = protonated 4,4'-bipyridine). Tb-MOF adopts a 3D network structure based on Tb ions and the (dpa) ligand through µ: η, η, η, η binding modes.

Studying the properties and phase diagram of iron at high-pressure and high-temperature conditions has relevant implications for Earth's inner structure and dynamics and the temperature of the inner core boundary (ICB) at 330 GPa. Also, a hexagonal-closed packed to body-centered cubic (bcc) phase transition has been predicted by many theoretical works but observed only in a few experiments. The recent coupling of high-power laser with advanced x-ray sources from synchrotrons allows for novel approaches to address these issues.

Background: Although amyloid deposition in brain is one of the hallmark pathological features of Alzheimer's disease (AD), the upstream events and its molecular environment in AD brain remain largely unknown. Recent advances in analytical methods such as mass spectrometry can provide the cutting-edge tools to unveil the AD pathogenesis at molecular and atomic level.

Method: In order to gain the comprehensive information about AD pathology at molecular level, postmortem brain sections of AD patients were analyzed by the hybrid molecular imaging methods composed of the conventional histological analyses, matrix assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI) for small molecules, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) imaging for metals, and particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) imaging for elements.

Kirensky Institute of Physics, Federal Research Center KSC SB RAS, Krasnoyarsk 660036, Russian Federation.

The crystal structures and hyperfine magnetic parameters of EuFe(BO) and mixed EuLaFe(BO) were studied over a wide temperature range in order to analyze correlations of the structural and magnetic features and the phase transitions in multiferroic compounds of the rare-earth iron borate family. The chemical compositions of the crystals are reported from X-ray fluorescence analysis. The crystal structures of EuFe(BO) and EuLaFe(BO) were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction in the temperature range 25-500 K.
