The Kondo effect, deriving from a local magnetic impurity mediating electron-electron interactions, constitutes a flourishing basis for understanding a large variety of intricate many-body problems. Its experimental implementation in tunable circuits has made possible important advances through well-controlled investigations. However, these have mostly concerned transport properties, whereas thermodynamic observations - notably the fundamental measurement of the spin of the Kondo impurity - remain elusive in test-bed circuits. Here, with a novel combination of a 'charge' Kondo circuit with a charge sensor, we directly observe the state of the impurity and its progressive screening. We establish the universal renormalization flow from a single free spin to a screened singlet, the associated reduction in the magnetization, and the relationship between scaling Kondo temperature and microscopic parameters. In our device, a Kondo pseudospin is realized by two degenerate charge states of a metallic island, which we measure with a non-invasive, capacitively coupled charge sensor. Such pseudospin probe of an engineered Kondo system opens the way to the thermodynamic investigation of many exotic quantum states, including the clear observation of Majorana zero modes through their fractional entropy.

We report spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy measurements of an Anderson impurity system in MoS_{2} mirror-twin boundaries, where both the quantum-confined impurity state and the Kondo resonance resulting from the interaction with the substrate are accessible. Using a spin-polarized tip, we observe magnetic-field-induced changes in the peak heights of the Anderson impurity states as well as in the magnetic-field-split Kondo resonance. Quantitative comparison with numerical renormalization group calculations provides evidence of the notable spin polarization of the spin-resolved impurity spectral function under the influence of a magnetic field.

Understanding the time evolution of strongly correlated open quantum systems (OQSs) in response to perturbations (quenches) is of fundamental importance to the precise control of quantum devices. It is, however, rather challenging in multi-impurity quantum systems because such evolution often involves multiple intricate dynamical processes. In this work, we apply the numerically exact hierarchical equations of motion approach to explore the influence of two different types of perturbations, i.

The intermediate behavior near a quantum phase transition is crucial for understanding the quantum criticality of various competing phases and their separate origins, yet it remains unexplored for the multiple Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states. Here, we investigated the detailed spectroscopic change of the exchange-coupling-dependent YSR states near a quantum phase transition. The initially developed one pair of YSR states, induced by the Fe vacancy in monolayer Fe(Te,Se) superconductor, are clearly resolved with high resolution showing an evolution into two pairs of YSR peaks yet with dichotomy in their spectral features as they enter the quantum phase transition region.

Quantum transport is often characterized not just by mean observables like the particle or energy current but by their fluctuations and higher moments, which can act as detailed probes of the physical mechanisms at play. However, relatively few theoretical methods are able to access the full counting statistics (FCS) of transport processes through electronic junctions in strongly correlated regimes. While most experiments are concerned with steady state properties, most accurate theoretical methods rely on computationally expensive propagation from a tractable initial state.

Excitations of individual and coupled spins on superconductors provide a platform to study quantum spin impurity models as well as a pathway toward realizing topological quantum computing. Here, we characterize, using ultralow temperature scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, the Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states of individual manganese phthalocyanine molecules with high spin on an ultrathin lead film in variable transverse magnetic field. We observe two types of YSR excitations, depending on the adsorption geometry.
