Comprehensive two dimensional gas chromatography - time of flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOFMS) for the investigation of botanical origin of raw spirits.

Food Chem

February 2025

Food Volatilomics and Sensomics Group, Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition, Poznań University of Life Sciences, Poznań, Poland. Electronic address:

Comprehensive two dimensional gas chromatography - time of flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC-TOFMS) with sample introduction using headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) was used for the botanical classification of raw spirits obtained from C3 (corn and sorghum) and C4 (rye, wheat and potato) plants. 45 spirit samples representing these raw materials (10 spirits produced from rye, corn, wheat and potato, and 5 from sorghum) were analyzed. Volatile compounds profiles were compared by PCA, and after removal of outliers samples were subjected to the classification model.

Introduction: For many samples studied by GC-based metabolomics applications, extensive sample preparation involving extraction followed by a two-step derivatization procedure of methoximation and trimethylsilylation (TMS) is typically required to expand the metabolome coverage. Performing normalization is critical to correct for variations present in samples and any biases added during the sample preparation steps and analytical runs. Addressing the totality of variations with an adequate normalization method increases the reliability of the downstream data analysis and interpretation of the results.

Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography under low-pressure conditions.

J Chromatogr A

August 2023

High Explosives Science and Technology, Q-5, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, NM 87545, USA. Electronic address:

The analysis of thermally labile and high-boiling point compounds by gas chromatography (GC) can be a challenge. One technique to overcome these challenges is low-pressure GC, which uses the vacuum produced from the mass spectrometer and wide-bore columns to elute compounds at significantly lower temperatures. While GC-MS is a powerful technique, comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC × GC), allows for resolution of compounds that would typically coelute using GC.

Review: Recent advancements and moving trends in chemical analysis of fire debris.

Forensic Sci Int

April 2023

Department of Analytical, Biopharmaceutical & Medical Sciences, Atlantic Technological University, Galway, Ireland. Electronic address:

This review describes recent advances and current trends in fire debris analysis from 2014 to 2021. Onsite analytical techniques used for fire scene investigation, identifying samples of interest for later analysis as well as onsite confirmatory techniques are examined. Laboratory techniques are reviewed both from a perspective of instrumentation and data analysis.
