This study investigates the chronological effects of oxygen on the structural transformations of PAN fibers during the rapid thermal stabilization process. In the shorter-time period, PAN fibers undergo a few thermal-driven dehydrogenation reactions alone, while the initiation of both oxidative dehydrogenation and oxygen uptake reactions requires a longer stabilization time. Interestingly, both the amorphous regions and the lateral crystallite sizes increase simultaneously during these periods, resulting in greater exothermic enthalpy.

Although human core body temperature is known to decrease with age, the age dependency of facial temperature and its potential to indicate aging rate or aging-related diseases remains uncertain. Here, we collected thermal facial images of 2,811 Han Chinese individuals 20-90 years old, developed the ThermoFace method to automatically process and analyze images, and then generated thermal age and disease prediction models. The ThermoFace deep learning model for thermal facial age has a mean absolute deviation of about 5 years in cross-validation and 5.

Ocean warming will continue to affect the growth, body condition and geographic distributions of marine fishes and understanding these effects is an urgent challenge for fisheries research and management. Determining how temperature is recorded in fish otolith carbonate, provides an additional chronological tool to investigate thermal histories, preferences and patterns of movement throughout an individual's life history. The influence of three water temperature treatments (22°C, 25°C, and 28°C) on hatchery-reared juvenile stout whiting, Sillago robusta, was tested using a controlled outdoor mesocosm system.

Climate change is causing more frequent and intense heatwaves. Therefore, it is important to understand how heatwaves affect the terrestrial carbon cycle, especially in grasslands, which are especially susceptible to climate extremes. This study assessed the impact of naturally occurring, simultaneous short-term heatwaves on CO fluxes in three ecosystems on the Mongolia Plateau: meadow steppe (MDW), typical steppe (TPL), and shrub-grassland (SHB).

Though pain sensitivity impairments contribute to chronic pain in younger adults, it is unclear if pain hypersensitivity manifests with aging and is heightened in the geriatric chronic low back pain population. The cross-sectional study preliminarily addressed this gap by measuring pain sensitivity in older adults with chronic low back pain (n = 25) as well as pain-free sex-matched older (n = 25) and younger adults (n = 25). Pain sensitivity was quantified by 8 distinct measures that were subdivided as static (ie, pressure pain thresholds, heat pain thresholds, fixed mechanical pain, and fixed cold pain) and dynamic pain sensitivity (ie, mechanical temporal summation, thermal ramp and hold, heat pain aftersensations, and conditioned pain modulation).
