The Orange Carotenoid Protein (OCP) is a unique photoreceptor crucial for cyanobacterial photoprotection. Best studied Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 OCP belongs to the large OCP1 family. Downregulated by the Fluorescence Recovery Protein (FRP) in low-light, high-light-activated OCP1 binds to the phycobilisomes and performs non-photochemical quenching. Recently discovered families OCP2 and OCP3 remain structurally and functionally underexplored, and no systematic comparative studies have ever been conducted. Here we present two first crystal structures of OCP2 from morphoecophysiologically different cyanobacteria and provide their comprehensive structural, spectroscopic and functional comparison with OCP1, the recently described OCP3 and all-OCP ancestor. Structures enable correlation of spectroscopic signatures with the effective number of hydrogen and discovered here chalcogen bonds anchoring the ketocarotenoid in OCP, as well as with the rotation of the echinenone's β-ionone ring in the CTD. Structural data also helped rationalize the observed differences in OCP/FRP and OCP/phycobilisome functional interactions. These data are expected to foster OCP research and applications in optogenetics, targeted carotenoid delivery and cyanobacterial biomass engineering.

Background Emerging evidence suggests mitochondrial dysfunction may play a role in the fatigue experienced by individuals with post-COVID-19 condition (PCC), commonly called long COVID, which can be assessed using MR spectroscopy. Purpose To compare mitochondrial function between participants with fatigue-predominant PCC and healthy control participants using MR spectroscopy, and to investigate the relationship between MR spectroscopic parameters and fatigue using the 11-item Chalder fatigue questionnaire. Materials and Methods This prospective, observational, single-center study (June 2021 to January 2024) included participants with PCC who reported moderate to severe fatigue, with normal blood test and echocardiographic results, alongside control participants without fatigue symptoms.

A mixed-ligand-based thermo-chemically robust and undulated metal-organic framework (MOF) is developed that embraces carboxamide moiety-grafted porous channels and activation-induced generation of open-metal site (OMS). The guest-free MOF acts as an outstanding heterogeneous catalyst in Hantzsch condensation for electronically assorted substrates with low catalyst loading and short duration under greener conditions than the reported materials. Besides Lewis acidic OMS, the carboxamide group activates the substrate via two-point hydrogen bonding, highlighting the effectiveness of custom-made functionalities in this multi-component reaction.

The information entropy based on the occupation numbers has been found to play a central role in a description of electron correlation within the density-matrix functional theory [-DMFT, see , 128, 013001]. In this article, the -DMFT method is applied to predict potential energy curves, equilibrium bond lengths, and harmonic vibrational frequencies for the hydrogen halides: HF, HCl, and HBr. The results are compared with other theoretical calculations and experimental spectroscopic data.

We report hitherto elusive side-on η2-bonded palladium(0) carbonyl (anthraquinone, benzaldehyde) and arene (benzene, hexa-fluorobenzene) palladium(0) complexes and present the catalytic hydrodefluorination of hexafluorobenzene by cyclohexene. The comparison with respective cyclohexene, pyridine and tetrahydrofuran complexes reveals that the experimental ligand binding strengths follow the order THF < C6H6 < C6F6 < cyclohexene < pyridine < benzaldehyde < anthraquinone. To understand this surprising order, the complexes' electronic structures were elucidated by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), single crystal X-Ray diffraction (sc-XRD), ultraviolet/visible (UV/Vis) electronic absorption, infrared (IR) vibrational, Pd L3-edge X-ray absorption (XAS), and X-ray photoelectron (XP) spectroscopic techniques, complemented by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations including energy decomposition (EDA-NOCV) and effective oxidation state (EOS) analyses.

With the development of nanotechnology, there is growing interest in using nanoparticles (NPs) for biomedical applications, such as diagnostics, drug delivery, imaging, and nanomedicine. The protein's structural stability plays a pivotal role in its functionality, and any alteration in this structure can have significant implications, including disease progression. Herein, we performed a combined experimental and computational study of the effect of gold NPs with a diameter of 5 nm (5 nm Au-NPs) on the structural stability of bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein in the absence and presence of NaCl salt.
