Background: The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) score ≥ 10 balances best sensitivity and specificity when detecting probable depression in patients. In the general population, different cut-offs are suggested. European studies on general populations validating the PHQ-9 against a diagnostic interview to detect depression are rare.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional observational epidemiological survey using multistage household probabilistic sampling to recruit a representative adult sample (N = 1203; age = 43.7 ± 13.6; 48.7% male). Mental disorders including current major depressive episode (MDE) were observer-rated (Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview). The PHQ-9, quality of life (QoL), and loneliness were self-assessed. We performed validity and reliability tests of the PHQ-9 and receiver operating curve (ROC) analysis.

Results: The Serbian PHQ-9 was internally consistent and correlated in the expected directions with QoL and loneliness. At the cut-off score ≥ 8, sensitivity was .85 and specificity was .91. ROC analysis showed that the area under the curve was .95, indicating that the Serbian PHQ-9 can discriminate very well between persons with/without MDE.

Conclusions: When the PHQ-9 is assessed against the structured diagnostic interview in the general population to detect depression, the cut-off of ≥8 balances best sensitivity and specificity.

Genes encoding OXA-48-like carbapenem-hydrolyzing enzymes are often located on plasmids and are abundant among carbapenemase-producing (CPE) worldwide. After a large plasmid-mediated outbreak in 2011, routine screening of patients at risk of CPE carriage on admission and every 7 days during hospitalization was implemented in a large hospital in the Netherlands. The objective of this study was to investigate the dynamics of the hospitals' 2011 outbreak-associated plasmid among CPE collected from 2011 to 2021.

Importance: The prevalence of pharmacies owned by integrated insurers and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), or insurer-PBMs, is of growing regulatory concern. However, little is known about the role of these pharmacies in Medicare, in which pharmacy network protections may influence market dynamics.

Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of insurer-PBM-owned pharmacies and the extent to which insurer-PBMs steer patients to pharmacies they own in Medicare.

Healthy Lifestyle Care vs Guideline-Based Care for Low Back Pain: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

JAMA Netw Open

January 2025

University Centre for Rural Health, School of Health Sciences, University of Sydney, Lismore, New South Wales, Australia.

Importance: An unhealthy lifestyle is believed to increase the development and persistence of low back pain, but there is uncertainty about whether integrating support for lifestyle risks in low back pain management improves patients' outcomes.

Objective: To assess the effectiveness of the Healthy Lifestyle Program (HeLP) compared with guideline-based care for low back pain disability.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This superiority, assessor-blinded randomized clinical trial was conducted in Australia from September 8, 2017, to December 30, 2020, among 346 participants who had activity-limiting chronic low back pain and at least 1 lifestyle risk (overweight, poor diet, physical inactivity, and/or smoking), referred from hospital, general practice, and community settings.

Epidemiological studies combining taxonomic and clinical data have been limited globally, particularly Guiyang, the most under-developed economic provincial capital city in southwestern China. A retrospective analysis was performed of dermatophyte epidemiology involving all culture-positive cases received between May 2017 and May 2023 at the Affiliated Hospital of Guizhou Medical University. Phylogenetic analysis was conducted on 391 dermatophyte isolates collected from patients using the rDNA internal transcribed spacer sequences.
