Background: Diarrhoeal diseases claim more than 1 million lives annually and are a leading cause of death in children younger than 5 years. Comprehensive global estimates of the diarrhoeal disease burden for specific age groups of children younger than 5 years are scarce, and the burden in children older than 5 years and in adults is also understudied. We used results from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to assess the burden of, and trends in, diarrhoeal diseases overall and attributable to 13 pathogens, as well as the contributions of associated risk factors, in children and adults in 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2021.

Penetrating skull stab.

Forensic Sci Med Pathol

December 2024

Institute of Legal Medicine, University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein, Arnold-Heller-Str. 3, Building 28, 24105, Kiel, Germany.

Fatal skull stabs are rare. In the case reported here, a 28-year-old man sustained an isolated penetrating skull injury from a knife and died two days later. The bone shard with the stab puncture, which was neurosurgically removed before death, later allowed the reproducible exact assignment of the murder knife found at the scene to the stab as well as the estimation of the length of the intracranial stab channel.

Postmortem analyses of myocardial microRNA expression in sepsis.

Sci Rep

November 2024

Research Group of Intensive Care Medicine, Intensive Care Centre, Oulu University Hospital, University of Oulu and Medical Research Center (MRC), PO BOX 29, 90029, Oulu, Finland.

Background: Sepsis can lead to myocardial depression, playing a significant role in sepsis pathophysiology, clinical care, and outcome. To gain more insight into the pathophysiology of the myocardial response in sepsis, we investigated the expression of microRNA in myocardial autopsy specimens in critically ill deceased with sepsis and non-septic controls.

Materials And Methods: In this retrospective observational study, we obtained myocardial tissue samples collected during autopsy from adult patients deceased with sepsis (n = 15) for routine histological examination.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the impact of COVID-19 on olfactory pathways by analyzing 63 autopsy cases, comparing 37 COVID-19 victims with 26 non-COVID controls.
  • Researchers measured various anatomical structures in the olfactory system and found significant reductions in the volume, weight, and dimensions of the olfactory bulbs and tracts in the COVID-19 group.
  • The findings suggest that COVID-19 causes notable damage to the olfactory centers, indicating the importance of understanding these changes for clinical and future research efforts related to the disease.

Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate the expression of erythroblast transformation specific-1 related gene (ERG) in patients with glioblastoma (GB) before and after bevacizumab (Bev) therapy as a predictive and prognostic biomarker.

Methods: The present study used 58 GB tissues from 29 patients in 3 settings. Sixteen tumors were removed after neoadjuvant Bev administration (neoBev) and 13 represented newly diagnosed GB without previous Bev treatment (naïve Bev).
