Novel Pharmacologic Treatments of Female Sexual Dysfunction.

Clin Obstet Gynecol

March 2025

Department of Psychiatry & Neurobehavioral Sciences.

This review evaluates pharmacologic treatments for female sexual dysfunction (FSD), focusing on hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD). We provide clinically relevant applications for Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved medications (flibanserin and bremelanotide) and investigational therapies (Lorexys and testosterone combinations). Detailed study outcomes, safety profiles, and clinical strategies guide clinicians in appropriate diagnosis, patient selection, expectation setting, side effect management, and patient education, improving treatment outcomes and patient satisfaction.

Exploring the Molecular Interplay Between Oxygen Transport, Cellular Oxygen Sensing, and Mitochondrial Respiration.

Antioxid Redox Signal

January 2025

Laboratory of Biochemistry and Vascular Biology, Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Silver Spring, Maryland, USA.

The mitochondria play a key role in maintaining oxygen homeostasis under normal oxygen tension (normoxia) and during oxygen deprivation (hypoxia). This is a critical balancing act between the oxygen content of the blood, the tissue oxygen sensing mechanisms, and the mitochondria, which ultimately consume most oxygen for energy production. We describe the well-defined role of the mitochondria in oxygen metabolism with a special focus on the impact on blood physiology and pathophysiology.

Introduction: Prompt treatment with IV thrombolytics (IVT) in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients is critical for improved recovery and survival. Recently, hospital systems have switched to the IVT tenecteplase (TNK) instead of the FDA-approved alteplase (tPA) for treatment. Multiple studies and meta-analyses evaluating the efficacy and safety of TNK demonstrate similar or superior outcomes when compared to tPA.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the risk of tumor formation with infliximab or azathioprine monotherapy versus their combination, using the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database.

Methods: Data were extracted from the FAERS database for patients treated with infliximab, azathioprine, and combination therapy from Q1 2004 to Q2 2024. Signal mining employed methods such as Reported Odds Ratio (ROR), Proportional Reporting Ratio (PRR), Multiple Gamma-Poisson Scaling Assessment (MGPSA) and Bayesian Confidence Interval Progressive Neural Network (BCPNN).
