This paper explores the application of cross-linked cellulose beads as a sustainable and cost-effective support for the ZnO/SnO/carbon xerogel hybrid photocatalyst. The application of the developed photocatalytic beads, named CB-Cat, was directed at a simultaneous adsorption/photocatalysis process, which was carried out under simulated sunlight. The characterization of the CB-Cat indicated a good dispersion of the photocatalyst of choice throughout the cellulose matrix, confirming its incorporation into the cellulose beads. Furthermore, it is possible to observe the presence of the photocatalyst on the surface of the CB-Cat, confirming its availability for the photonic activation process. The results showed that the simultaneous adsorption/photocatalysis process was optimal for enhancing the efficiency of methylene blue (MB) removal, especially when compared to the isolated adsorption process. Additionally, the regeneration of the CB-Cat between cycles was favorable toward the maintenance of the MB removal efficiency, as the process carried out without regeneration displayed significant efficiency drops between cycles. Finally, the mechanism evaluation evidenced that hydroxyl and superoxide radicals were the main responsible for the MB photocatalytic degradation during illumination with simulated sunlight.

In this study, a novel cellulose-derived support of amino-functionalized cellulose beads (ACBs) for laccase immobilization was successfully developed using cellulose beads (CBs) and polyethyleneimine by glutaraldehyde crosslinking reaction. The covalent immobilization of laccase on ACBs was achieved via a Schiff base reaction. The obtained enzyme catalysts (Lac-ACBs) were applied for simultaneous adsorption and enzymatic conversion of tetracycline (TC) from water.

This study aims to prepare a monodisperse catalyst with a space-confined strategy, employing cellulose beads (CBs) as a carrier. Amino functionalized cellulose beads (ACBs) were prepared by grafting polyethyleneimine into the space of CBs via glutaraldehyde cross-linking. The in-situ reduction method was successfully employed to confine monodisperse ultrasmall gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) within the amino functionalized cellulose beads (AuNPs@ACBs) matrix.

Hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) is known for its ability to form cholesteric liquid crystalline phases displaying vivid structural colors. However, these vibrant colors tend to fade over time when the material dries. This issue is a major bottleneck to finding practical applications for these materials.

Osteomyelitis arises from the incomplete treatment of the external wounds in the healing process, while bacterial infections persist within the bone marrow, leading to abscess formation. Osteomyelitis treatments generally involve three main aspects: rapid bactericidal action, sustained bacteriostasis, and induction of bone regeneration. However, current treatment methods, which often combine surgical debridement with long-term high-dose intravenous antibiotic administration or poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) beads antibiotic therapy, suffer from significant drawbacks and limitations.

The increasing demand for biotherapeutics has necessitated the evaluation of their critical quality attributes, one of which is glycosylation, an essential post-translational modification found on many biological molecules. In particular, the purification of N-glycans after their release from the proteins and derivatization is important in ensuring the removal of the deglycosylated protein, excess labelling reagents and salts for subsequent analysis. However, current methods of N-glycans purification are either expensive, laborious, time-consuming or not catered for high throughput analysis.
