Future Directions in the Treatment of Low-Grade Gliomas.

Cancer J

January 2025

Department of Radiation Oncology, Miami Cancer Institute, Baptist Health South Florida, Miami, FL.

There is major interest in deintensifying therapy for isocitrate dehydrogenase-mutant low-grade gliomas, including with single-agent cytostatic isocitrate dehydrogenase inhibitors. These efforts need head-to-head comparisons with proven modalities, such as chemoradiotherapy. Ongoing clinical trials now group tumors by intrinsic molecular subtype, rather than classic clinical risk factors.

Strontium-90 plesiotherapy delivers high doses of radiation to superficial lesions (<3 mm depth) with excellent sparing of deeper tissues. The sealed-source applicator tip is circular and 8-10 mm in diameter. Larger treatment fields are treated with multiple overlapping fields.

Background: PSMA PET/CT emerges as a pivotal technology in the diagnostic landscape of prostate cancer (PCa). It offers a suite of imaging interpretation criteria, notably the maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax), the molecular imaging prostate-specific membrane antigen score (miPSMA score), and the PSMA reporting and data system (PSMA-RADS). Identifying the most valuable criteria for diagnosing PCa and standardizing imaging interpretation across various tracers is an unresolved question.

Characteristics of Ra-226 particles from legacy contamination and implications for radiological protection.

Sci Total Environ

January 2025

Biological and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Natural Sciences, University of Stirling, Stirling FK9 4LA, United Kingdom.

Radioactive particles are physically discrete sources of radioactivity that have been released into the environment as result of past accidents, incidents, and practices, and can present a hazard to members of the public. The historical use of radium in the luminising of aircraft components, and the subsequent decommissioning of those aircraft and associated waste disposal practices, has left a legacy of contamination, such as the radioactive particles containing Ra-226 at Dalgety Bay, Scotland. The aim of this research was to physically, chemically, and radiologically characterise Ra-226 particles from Dalgety Bay and consider the implications for radiological protection of the public.

The presence of the long-lived radionuclides Cs and Sr in ecosystems is a major environmental concern because bioavailable forms of the radionuclides are readily transferred to living organisms. The present study investigated how holometabolous insect development influences the fate of radiocaesium and radiostrontium by examining the behaviour of tracers (Cs and Sr) and stable elements during the larval feeding stage (21-23 days old), the pupal stage, and the adult stage. We aimed to evaluate the degree to which an herbivore or a detritivore food chain could serve as transfer pathways to higher trophic levels in terms of accumulation potential, and during which stage of development the accumulation potential is highest.
