Optimizing decision-making potential, cost, and environmental impact of traps for monitoring olive fruit fly Bactrocera oleae (Rossi) (Diptera: Tephritidae).

J Econ Entomol

Department of Agronomy, María de Maeztu Excellence Unit DAUCO, ETSIAM, University of Cordoba, Campus de Rabanales, Building C4 Celestino Mutis, 14071 Cordoba, Spain.

This work aimed to optimize olive fruit fly (OFF) Bactrocera oleae (Rossi) (Diptera: Tephritidae) monitoring and integrated management, thereby ensuring optimal and less-costly decision-making and timely intervention. Field trials in Andalusia (Spain) were undertaken over 2 years to optimize trap model, color, size, and density for the accurate determination of pest spatial distribution and damage as a function of olive cultivar. McPhail traps and yellow sticky panels outperformed the other 4 models with respect to the number of OFF captured.

Further Evidence That Female (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) Utilizes Photo-Degradation to Produce Volatiles That Are Attractive to Adult Males.

The Asian longhorned beetle, (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae: Lamiinae), is a serious pest of over 43 species of hardwood trees in North America, China and Europe. The development of an effective lure and trap for monitoring has been hindered by the fact that mate finding involves a rather complex series of behaviors and responses to several chemical (and visual), cues. Adults (female-biased) locate a tree via host kairomones.

The trypanosomosis remains unresolved due to its impact on various hosts, leading to production losses in Ethiopia. In the Southwest of Oromia, multiple livestock species share grazing land in tsetse-infested areas. Thus, a cross-sectional study was conducted from December 2020 to December 2021 to determine the prevalence and associated risk factors of trypanosomosis in bovines, small ruminants, and equines, as well as the distribution of the vector in the Dabo Hana district of Southwest Oromia, Ethiopia.

Background: Residual malaria transmissions in Africa may be associated with improved coverage of insecticide-treated nets, house features, and livestock husbandry. These human-land use activities may drive the ecology and behaviour of malaria vectors which sustain residual malaria transmission. This study was conducted to assess changes in the ecology and behaviour of Anopheles funestus and Anopheles arabiensis in villages with high coverage of insecticide-treated nets to guide the selection of complementary vector control strategies against residual malaria transmission.

Background: Attractive targeted sugar baits (ATSBs) are promising new interventions that can complement existing vector control tools. However, reproducible and quantitative information on the level of attractiveness of ATSBs under field conditions is needed. Therefore, we customized camera traps for close-up imaging.
