We introduce a new, to the best of our knowledge, class of optical beams, which feature a spatial profile akin to an "inverted pin." In particular, we asymptotically find that close to the axis, the transverse amplitude profile of such beams takes the form of a Bessel function with a width that gradually increases during propagation. We examine numerically the behavior of such inverted pin beams in turbulent environments as measured via the scintillation index and show that they outperform Gaussian beams (collimated and focused) as well as Bessel beams and regular pin beams, which are all optimized, especially in the moderate and strong fluctuation regimes.

We present a novel technique for coherent beam combining of a three-aperture array. In our method, a retroreflector samples the beam from the edge of each aperture and redirects the sampled beams back through the gap in the center. The sampled beams contain both angle and phase information for the three-aperture array, which can be used to lock the phase and tip/tilt.

Owing to their specially engineered distribution, these beams have shown remarkable performance in atmospheric turbulence. The emerging technique of neutral beam microscopy offers a non-perturbative way of imaging surfaces of various materials which cannot be studied using conventional microscopes. Current neutral beam microscopes use either diffractive focusing or pin-hole scanning to achieve spatial resolution, and are characterised by a strong dependence of the imaging time on the required resolution. In this work we introduce an alternative method for achieving spatial resolution with neutral atom beams which is based on manipulating the magnetic moments of the beam particles in a gradient field, and is characterised by a much weaker dependence of the imaging time on the image resolution.
