A new measurement technique employing light scattering at different angles has been developed for analysis of blood cells. This method which is part of the Technicon H*1 system, a hematology analyzer designed for routine processing of human blood samples, allows the independent measurement of cell volume and hemoglobin content of isovolumetrically sphered red blood cells. Analysis with this instrument of the blood of humans, dogs, rabbits, rats and mice demonstrates that in addition to the expected differences in hematologic parameters, the intrasample distribution of cell hemoglobin is species dependent. In general, cell hemoglobin content is more tightly controlled for the other mammals when compared to humans. In particular, the dogs tested showed the least variability in cell hemoglobin content both within species and within sample.

Truncated hemoglobins (TrHbs) have an ancient origin and are widely distributed in microorganisms where they often serve roles other than dioxygen transport and storage. In extremophiles, these small heme proteins must have features that secure function under challenging conditions: at minimum, they must be folded, retain the heme group, allow substrates to access the heme cavity, and maintain their quaternary structure if present and essential. The genome of the obligate psychropiezophile Shewanella benthica strain KT99 harbors a gene for a TrHb belonging to a little-studied clade of globins (subgroup 2 of group N).

Background: Iron deficiency (ID) is the most common nutritional deficiency among patients undergoing major surgery. Treatment of ID is straightforward, however implementing a comprehensive anemia management strategy within clinical routines is complex. Recently, reticulocyte hemoglobin content (Ret-He) has been evaluated as an early marker for ID diagnosis.

Porcine blood is rich in protein and has always been the focus of research. Heme-peptides prepared from porcine hemoglobin are susceptible to oxidative degeneration during preparation and storage, thus affecting their function and stability. This study evaluated the enhancement effects of L-lysine (Lys) on recovery rate, antioxidant activity, stability, and structure.

Blood sampling and analysis are essential procedures for assessing the health status of exotic pets. While careful manual restraint is generally recommended, sedation may be necessary in specific cases. However, the use of chemical restraint may introduce analytical variations.

Purpose: To examine the associations and substitutions of dietary sugars [extrinsic (free) or intrinsic (non-free)] as well as dietary starch and fiber intakes for indices of body fat and cardiometabolic health.
Methods: Dietary intake was assessed at multiple times using multi-day 24-hour recalls over 18-months for indices of body fat (body fat %, waist circumference, BMI, and weight change) (n = 1066) and at baseline and 12 months for cardiometabolic outcomes (LDL, HDL, HbA1c) (n = 736). Bayesian modeling was applied to analyze the probabilistic impact of dietary carbohydrate components using credible intervals for association and substitution analyses with repeated measures random effects modeling.
