Ethanol is frequently used not only as priming but also as a solvent to dissolve hardly water-soluble phytohormones gibberellic acid (GA) and abscisic acid (ABA) in seed germination. However, the molecular and physiological mechanisms of ethanol's impact on seed germination remain elusive. In this report, we investigated how ethanol affected reactive oxygen species (ROS) during rice seed germination. Ethanol at a concentration of 3.5% (v/v) inhibited 90% seed germination, which was almost reversed by HO. HO contents in embryos were reduced by ethanol after 18 h imbibition. Antioxidant enzymes assays revealed that only superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities in seed embryos were lowered by ethanol, in line with the suppressed mRNA expression of SOD genes during imbibition. Additionally, compared to the mock condition, ethanol increased ABA contents but decreased GA (GA and GA) in seed embryos, resulting in disharmonizing GA/ABA balance. Conceivably ethanol induced transcription of OsNCEDs, the key genes for ABA biosynthesis, and OsABA8ox3, a key gene for ABA catabolism. Furthermore, ethanol promoted ABA signaling by upregulating ABA receptor genes and ABA-responsive element (ABRE)-binding protein/ABRE-binding factors during imbibition. Overall, our results demonstrate that lowering of HO levels due to suppressed SOD activities in rice germinating seed embryos is the decisive factor for ethanol-induced inhibition of seed germination, and GA/ABA balance and ABA signaling also play important roles in ethanol's inhibitory impact on seed germination.

Proper management of cattle reproduction has a major impact on the efficiency and profitability of dairy production. Ultrasound examination and transrectal palpation or the pregnancy-associated glycoprotein (PAG) test are currently the most commonly used methods for pregnancy diagnosis. However, alternative methods to those mentioned above are constantly being sought in order to minimise stress during the examination, the cost of veterinary services and to reduce the rate of errors in pregnancy diagnosis.

Red, known as Huangjing in Chinese, is a perennial plant valued in traditional Chinese medicine and is a nutritional food ingredient. With increasing market demand outpacing wild resource availability, cultivation has become essential for sustainable production. However, the cultivation of is challenged by the double dormancy characteristics of seeds, which include embryo and physiological dormancy.

Extreme conditions, such as cold and high humidity in northeast China's high-latitude maize region, can hinder crop yield and stability during the vegetative stage. However, there is a paucity of research examining the effects of simultaneous cold and high humidity stress on plant responses. In this study, we characterized the acclimation of JD558 (cold- and high humidity-sensitive hybrid) and JD441 (cold- and high humidity-tolerant hybrid) to stress at sowing caused by cold (4 °C), high humidity (25%), and their combined stress for five days, using physiological measurements and metabolomics during the stress treatments and recovery stages.

Polyploidization (diploidy → polyploidy) was more likely to be positively associated with seed mass than with seed germination. Polyploidy is common in flowering plants, and polyploidization can be associated with the various stages of a plant's life cycle. Our primary aim was to determine the association (positive, none or negative) of polyploidy with seed mass/germination via a literature review.
