This study provides insights into the mechanisms of polymyxin resistance in clinical isolates and demonstrates potential strategies of polymyxin and vancomycin combinations for combating this resistance. We also identified possible mechanisms that might be associated with the treatment of these combinations against carbapenem- and polymyxin-resistant clinical isolates. The findings have significant implications for the development of alternative therapies and the effective management of infections caused by these pathogens.

The feasibility of repurposing selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors as adjunctive antibacterial agents is an area of current investigation. We sought to evaluate if fluoxetine will achieve synergistic killing with relevant antibacterial drugs against skin and soft tissue pathogens and multidrug-resistant pathogens. : The MIC of fluoxetine was determined using broth microdilution for a diverse isolate collection of 21 organisms.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the rising issue of bloodstream infections (BSIs) in Rwanda, focusing on the types of bacteria involved and their susceptibility to antibiotics from 2020 to 2022.
  • A total of 1,532 blood culture tests were analyzed, revealing that Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria accounted for 48.2% and 51.8% of cases, respectively, with notable species being Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella.
  • The findings highlight the effectiveness of various antibiotics, including Amikacin and Meropenem, in treating these infections, and suggest a need for improved strategies in managing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Rwanda.

Department of Pharmacotherapy, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Hokkaido University of Science.

The implementation of antimicrobial stewardship (AS) is an important issue that pharmacists should promote through cooperation with physicians and other medical professionals. A core strategy for AS is "proactive intervention and feedback" on antimicrobial prescriptions. We evaluated the AS program to optimize antimicrobial chemotherapy in patients with positive blood cultures.

A microfluidic in vitro method predicting the fate of peptide drugs after subcutaneous administration.

Int J Pharm

December 2024

Department of Medicinal Chemistry, Uppsala University, BMC P.O. Box 574, SE-751 23, Uppsala, Sweden. Electronic address:

For many biopharmaceuticals, subcutaneous (sc) administration is the only viable route. However, there is no in vitro method available accurately predicting the absorption profiles of subcutaneously injected pharmaceuticals. In this work, we show that a recently developed microfluidics method for interaction studies (MIS) has the potential to be useful in this respect.
