Multianionic metal hydrides, which exhibit a wide variety of physical properties and complex structures, have recently attracted growing interest. Here we present Sr N[BN ] H , prepared in a solid-state ampoule reaction at 800 °C, as the first combination of nitridoborate, nitride and hydride anions within a single compound. The crystal structure was solved from single-crystal X-ray and neutron powder diffraction data in space group P2 /c (no. 14), revealing a three-dimensional network of undulated layers of nitridoborate units, strontium atoms and hydride together with nitride anions. Magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR and vibrational spectroscopy in combination with quantum chemical calculations further confirm the structure model. Electrochemical measurements suggest the existence of hydride ion conductivity, allowing the hydrides to migrate along the layers.

X-ray pure samples of SrBa8[BN2]6 and EuBa8[BN2]6 were synthesized from appropriate amounts of binary nitrides (Sr3N2, Ba3N2 and BN in sealed niobium ampoules and EuN, Ba3N2 and BN in BN crucibles, respectively) at temperatures up to 1370 K. The structure of SrBa8[BN2]6 was refined from single crystal X-ray diffractometer data: Fd3[combining macron]m, a = 1595.1(1) pm, wR(F(2)) = 0.

Solid state metathesis reactions can be used in the syntheses of inorganic solids and for strategic design of novel, eventually thermally labile materials. An explorative study of solid state metathesis reactions is presented for a number of examples, including syntheses of nitridoborates, carbodiimides, tetracyanoborates, tetracyanamidosilicates, carbon-nitride materials, and a number of other exciting compounds. This unique type of reaction is very efficient because it uses the intrinsic energy of reaction partners being involved.

Investigations of the nitridoborates of lanthanides (Ln) have progressed significantly during the last few years. New compounds have been synthesized and characterized and are presented here together with some of their properties. Currently two distinct methods serve for the preparation of nitridoborate compounds; either hexagonal boron nitride undergoes a fragmentation through the reaction with LnN, or dinitridoborate ions are converted into other nitridoborate ions.
