This study investigates the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the luminescence properties of CsPbBr single crystals at 12 K. The luminescence at the edge of the band gap reveals a structure attributed to free excitons, phonon replica of the free excitons, and Rashba excitons. Changes in the relative intensity of the free and Rashba excitons were observed with increasing pressure, caused by changes in the probability of nonradiative deexcitation. At pressures around 3 GPa, luminescence completely fades away. The red shift of the energy position of the maximum luminescence of free and Rashba excitons in pressure ranges of 0-1.3 GPa is attributed to the length reduction of Pb-Br bonds in [PbBr] octahedra, while the high-energy shift of the Rashba excitons at pressures above 1.3 GPa is due to [PbBr] octahedra rotation and changes in the Pb-Br-Pb angle.

Spin-Orbital Ordering Effects of Light Emission in Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Metal Halide Perovskites.

Adv Mater

December 2024

Organic-inorganic hybrid metal halide perovskites carrying strong spin-orbital coupling (SOC) have demonstrated remarkable light-emitting properties in spontaneous emission, amplified spontaneous emission (ASE), and circularly-polarized luminescence (CPL). Experimental studies have shown that SOC plays an important role in controlling the light-emitting properties in such hybrid perovskites. Here, the SOC consists of both orbital (L) and spin (S) momentum, leading to the formation of J (= L + S) excitons intrinsically involving orbital and spin momentum.

Electrically Generated Exciton Polaritons with Spin On-Demand.

Adv Mater

November 2024

Generation and manipulation of exciton polaritons with controllable spin could deeply impact spintronic applications, quantum simulations, and quantum information processing, but is inherently challenging due to the charge neutrality of the polariton and the device complexity it requires. Here, electrical generation of spin-polarized exciton polaritons in a monolithic dielectric perovskite metasurface embedded in a light-emitting transistor is demonstrated. A finely tailored interplay of in- and out-of-plane symmetry breaking of the metasurface allows to lift the spin degeneracy through the polaritonic Rashba effect, yielding high spin purity with normalized Stokes parameter of S ≈ 0.

Motivated by the exceptional optoelectronic properties of 2D Janus layers (JLs), we explore the properties of group Va antimony-based JLs SbXY (X = Se/Te and Y = I/Br). Using Bader charges, the electric dipole moment in the out-of-plane direction of all the JLs is studied and the largest dipole moment is found to be in the SbSeI JL. Our results on the formation energy, phonon spectra, elastic constants, and molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulation provide insights into the energetic, vibrational, mechanical, and thermal stability of JLs.

Chiral lead halide perovskites (chiral LHPs) have emerged as one of the best candidates for opto-spintronics due to their large spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and unique chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) even in the absence of a magnetic field. Here, we report the impact of halide composition on circular dichroism (CD) and magneto-photoluminescence (PL) effects of chiral 2D LHPs (/-MBA)PbBrI (MBA = CHCH(CH)NH). By tuning the mixing ratio of Br/I halide anions, we find that (/-MBA)PbBrI thin films exhibit tunable and wide wavelength range CD signals.

Metal halide perovskite materials (MHPs) are promising for several applications due to their exceptional properties. Understanding excitonic properties is essential for exploiting these materials. For this purpose, we focus on CsPbBr3 single crystals, which have higher crystal quality, are more stable, and have no Rashba effect at low temperatures compared to other 3D MHPs.
