Published: December 2023

Background: Combined heart-liver transplantation (CHLT) is a promising technique to address end stage organ failure in patients with concomitant heart failure and chronic liver disease. While most experience with CHLT has involved adult patients, the expanding population of children born with univentricular congenital heart disease who underwent the Fontan procedure and develop Fontan-associated liver disease (FALD) has emerged as a growing indication for pediatric CHLT.

Methods: Currently, CHLT is performed at a select subset of experienced transplant centers, especially in the pediatric population.

Results: While technically demanding, CHLT may offer survival benefit when compared to heart transplant alone with decreased rejection of both synchronous allografts and equivalent outcomes with respect to waitlist time and post-operative complications. Limitations in the technique can be attributed to need for an appropriate multidisciplinary care center, challenges with donor organ availability and allocation, and the complexity associated with patient selection and peri-operative management.

Conclusion: In this review, we summarize the history of CHLT, discuss patient selection, and highlight key facets of peri-operative care in the pediatric population.

Introduction: Each year the number of combined heart-liver transplants (HLT) increases, with two distinct patient populations proceeding down this pathway. The first are patients with congenital heart disease (CHD), most commonly single ventricle patients palliated with Fontan. The second group are those with long standing congestive hepatopathy, amyloidosis, hemochromatosis, or alcohol induced myopathies and liver disease.

Introduction: Prostate cancer incidence in immunosuppressed transplant recipients increases as life expectancy improves in this population. However, the management of treatments and immunosuppressive (IS) regimens for solid organ transplant recipients diagnosed with prostate cancer remains poorly defined. Therefore, we conducted a multicentric study to investigate these parameters more thoroughly.

A combined en bloc heart and liver transplant is a rare form of a combined dual organ transplant in which the donor heart and liver remain connected via the inferior caval vein both during procurement and during the transplant. We present a patient who underwent a combined en bloc heart and liver transplant due to heart failure and cirrhosis, after having previously undergone repair of complex biventricular congenital heart disease.

Safety observation of COVID-19 inactivated vaccine in immature mice.

Immunopharmacol Immunotoxicol

November 2024

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, National Clinical Research Center for Obstetrics and Gynecology, Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China.

Objective: To investigate the safety of COVID-19 inactivated vaccine in immature mice.

Methods: We selected 3-week-old immature BALB/c mice, continuously observed until 7 weeks old after continuous immunization with fully inactivated vaccine (initial strengthening), and sacrificed BALB/c mice at 7 weeks old, and used H&E, Masson, mast cells and Ki-67 staining to analyze the changes of heart, liver, spleen, kidney, lung and brain. In addition, RNA was extracted from important organs such as the heart, liver, spleen, kidney, lung, and brain, and to evaluate whether there was any effect after vaccination through bulk-RNA sequencing.

( 610041) Department of Ultrasound Medicine, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu 610041, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the use of curcumin-enhanced sonodynamic therapy as a potential new treatment for malignant melanoma, focusing on its targeting ability and inducing cancer cell death.
  • Researchers created a form of curcumin coated with melanoma cell membranes, which was then tested in various experimental groups on mice to measure effectiveness and safety.
  • Results showed that the combination of biomimetic curcumin and ultrasound significantly increased apoptosis (programmed cell death) in melanoma cells, indicating a promising avenue for melanoma treatment.
