Objective: To investigate the effect of smoking on choroidal microvasculature dropout (MvD) in glaucoma.

Design: Cross-sectional study.

Setting: Tertiary glaucoma centre.

Participants: 223 eyes of 163 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma who had undergone imaging with optical coherence tomography angiography and completed a questionnaire on smoking from the Diagnostic Innovations in Glaucoma Study.

Primary Outcome Measures: Linear mixed-effects models were used to determine the effect of each parameter on MvD area and angular circumference. The sensitivity analysis was performed by categorising the glaucoma severity determined by visual field mean deviation (MD).

Results: MvD was found in 37 (51.4%) eyes with smoking history and in 67 (44.4%) eyes with non-smokers (p=0.389). Larger MvD area and wider angular circumference were found in smokers compared with non-smokers (p=0.068 and p=0.046, respectively). In a multivariable model, smoking intensity was significantly associated with MvD area (0.30(95% CI 0.01 to 0.60) each 0.01 mm per 10 pack-years; p=0.044). In eyes with moderate-severe glaucoma (MD <-6), smoking intensity was associated with larger MvD area (0.47 (95% CI 0.11 to 0.83) each 0.01 mm per 10 pack-years; p=0.011), whereas no significant association was found in early glaucoma (MD ≥-6) (-0.08 (95% CI -0.26 to 0.11), p=0.401).

Conclusions: Smoking intensity was associated with larger choroidal MvD area in eyes with glaucoma, especially in patients with more severe disease.

Trial Registration Number: NCT00221897.

Background: Prostate cancer (PCa) is the leading cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality in men worldwide. An early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment and prognosis. Traditional invasive procedures such as image-guided prostate biopsy often cause discomfort and complications, deterring some patients from undergoing these necessary tests.

Objectives: Shear-wave elastography (SWE) provides valuable stiffness within breast masses, making it a useful supplement to conventional ultrasound imaging. Super-resolution ultrasound (SRUS) imaging enhances microvascular visualization, aiding in the differential diagnosis of breast masses. Current clinical ultrasound diagnosis of breast cancer primarily relies on gray-scale ultrasound.

Predicting corneal decompensation in Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy with Scheimpflug tomography and clinical parameters.

Indian J Ophthalmol

January 2025

Department of Ophthalmology, Université Paris Cité, Cochin Hospital, Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris, Paris, France.

Purpose: This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of various tomographic indices, both established and novel, in predicting endothelial decompensation leading to either spontaneous corneal transplantation or transplantation following cataract surgery in patients with Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD).

Methods: In this cross-sectional, retrospective study, we reviewed the files of 93 eyes from 54 FECD patients undergoing regular follow-up. We recorded clinical metrics such as morning visual disturbance (MVD) and corrected distance visual acuity.

Risk factors for postoperative recurrence after full-endoscopic microvascular decompression for trigeminal neuralgia: a retrospective study and predictive nomogram.

Eur J Med Res

December 2024

Department of Neurosurgery, Neuromedicine Center, Beijing Shijitan Hospital, Capital Medical University, No. 10, Tieyi Road, Yangfangdian, Haidian District, Beijing, 100038, People's Republic of China.

Background: Full-endoscopic microvascular decompression (fE-MVD) is an emerging treatment option for trigeminal neuralgia (TN). However, the risk factors associated with postoperative recurrence of TN after fE-MVD procedure remain controversial. The aim of the present study was to summarize the surgical technique of fE-MVD for the treatment of TN and to develop a predictive model for recurrence at 1 year postoperatively based on independent risk factors.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers studied 1485 patients undergoing invasive coronary angiography (ICA) to predict the likelihood of severe multivessel disease (MVD), which can impact decisions about transradial access (TRA) in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).
  • The predictive model showed a sensitivity of 70.3% and specificity of 71.8%, with a strong negative predictive value of 94.4%, indicating its effectiveness in identifying patients who may not have severe MVD.
  • Key indicators of severe MVD included abnormal test history, typical chest pain, and diabetes, while factors indicating the absence of severe MVD included female sex, atypical chest pain, and BMI, helping clinicians tailor access strategies for CABG based on individual patient
