AI Article Synopsis

  • The study evaluated the implementation, reasons for non-implementation, and perceived effectiveness of biosecurity measures (BMs) in Italian poultry farms by surveying 67 stakeholders (farmers and advisors) across various poultry sectors from April to September 2021.* * Results showed a relatively high level of BM implementation (66.97% for advisors and 81.14% for farmers), with the breeder sector having the highest adherence at 85.71%. However, many respondents cited "not knowing advantages" and "other/specific reasons" as barriers to implementation.* * Perception of effectiveness varied, with only 31.09% of farmers believing that the BMs they did not implement were effective, while 61.02% of

Article Abstract

The level of implementation of biosecurity measures (BMs), the reasons for not implementing BMs and the effectiveness of BMs were assessed according to the perceptions of stakeholders (i.e., farmers and advisors) in Italian poultry farms. For this purpose, data were collected using a questionnaire administered to advisors ( = 37) and farmers ( = 30) of conventional broiler ( = 13) and layer ( = 13), free-range broiler ( = 8) and layer ( = 10), turkey ( = 13), duck ( = 3) and breeder ( = 7) farms between April and September 2021. The frequency of the implementation of BMs was 66.97% and 81.14% according to the answers provided by the advisors and farmers, respectively, with the breeder sector showing the highest level of implementation (85.71%). "Not knowing advantages" (21.49% for advisors) and "other/specific reasons" (21.49% for advisors and 38.32% for farmers) were the most common answers regarding the lack of implementation of BMs for all poultry sectors. Only 31.09% of farmers acknowledged the effectiveness of not-implemented BMs in contrast to 61.02% of advisors, with the layers' stakeholders being the most aware. The findings of this study may be useful for identifying failures in biosecurity and failures to develop intervention strategies to fulfil the biosecurity gaps still present in Italian poultry farms.

Article Synopsis
  • The study monitored the circulation of Influenza A virus (AIV) in wild ducks and birds in Lombardy from 2022-2024, analyzing samples collected from hunting and dead birds using real-time RT-PCR and whole genome sequencing.
  • Out of 3,497 hunted ducks, 184 tested positive for AIV, revealing 21 different subtypes, with H5N1 HPAIV being the most common during winter 2022-2023.
  • In surveys of dead wild birds, notably buzzards and gulls, two buzzards and one grey heron tested positive for H5N1, while gulls showed a significant increase in positivity from 0% in 2022 to 51%

  • The common tern, a migratory seabird, is facing a decline in populations across Europe due to threats like habitat destruction and human interference.
  • A study analyzed the genetic structure and diversity of common terns from Northern, Southern Inland, and Southern Marine areas using genetic markers, revealing high diversity overall, but the Southern Marine group had the least.
  • The findings suggested weak population genetic structure with high gene flow, indicating that geographical distance between breeding colonies had little impact on genetic differences; the study recommends further research on migration dynamics and conservation efforts for breeding sites.

  • The domestication of turkeys dates back to 700-200 BC in Mexico, leading to the creation of various local turkey breeds through a collaborative effort.
  • This research analyzes the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) of 73 turkeys from different populations, including Italian and American breeds, as well as wild turkeys from the USA and Mexico, to explore biodiversity and breed relationships.
  • The study found 44 polymorphic sites and identified 32 unique haplotypes, with the most common ones (H1 and H2) showing different geographic distributions and highlighting greater mtDNA variability in USA and Mexican samples compared to others.

Urbanization and globalization have led to an increasing concern and focus on the sustainability of the food sector, particularly in discussing the composition of consumers' diets. This study examines Italian consumption habits, categorizing them into four macro-geographical areas (North-West, North-East, Center, South, and Islands), utilizing public data obtained from surveys including 3323 individuals, and assesses their environmental impacts through the application of the Life Cycle Assessment methodology. The findings unveil distinct dietary patterns across Italian macro-regions, indicative of cultural disparities, and present avenues for promoting environmentally sustainable dietary choices.

The clinical relevance of avian metapneumovirus (aMPV) is growing in the poultry sector, especially in broiler farming, where no vaccination is administered in Italy. Given the naïve status of the birds, a serological survey was conducted in a densely populated area of Northern Italy, to evaluate aMPV circulation. Seven farms were selected and sampled in summer/fall, then sampling was repeated in the following season (winter/spring) to assess a possible seasonal effect.
