: Understanding the relationships between subjective shoulder stiffness, muscle hardness, and various factors is crucial. Our cross-sectional study identified subgroups of shoulder stiffness based on symptoms and muscle hardness and investigated associated factors. : measures included subjective stiffness, pain, muscle hardness, and factors like physical and psychological conditions, pressure pain threshold, postural alignment, heart rate variability, and electroencephalography in 40 healthy young individuals. : Three clusters were identified: Cluster 1 with high stiffness, pain, and muscle hardness; Cluster 2 with low stiffness and pain but high muscle hardness; and Cluster 3 with low levels of all factors. Cluster 1 had significantly higher central sensitization-related symptoms (CSS) scores than Cluster 2. Subjective stiffness is positively correlated with psychological factors. : our results suggest that CSS impacts subjective symptom severity among individuals with similar shoulder muscle hardness.

An Octopus-Inspired Soft Pneumatic Robotic Arm.

Biomimetics (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Hellenic Mediterranean University, GR-71410 Heraklion, Greece.

This paper addresses the design, development, control, and experimental evaluation of a soft robot arm whose actuation is inspired by the muscular structure of the octopus arm, one of the most agile biological manipulators. The robot arm is made of soft silicone and thus possesses enhanced compliance, which is beneficial in a variety of applications where the arm may come into contact with delicate features of its environment. The arm is composed of three elongated segments arranged in series, each one of which contains several pneumatically actuated chambers embedded in its silicone body, which may induce various types of deformations of the segment.

Background: Low-frequency acupuncture is used to maintain skeletal muscle flexibility and improve joint range of motion; however, its definite effects are unclear. This study aimed to determine the effects of low-frequency acupuncture on muscle and fascial stiffness and ankle dorsiflexion range of motion.

Methods: The participants included 12 randomly selected healthy adults.
