Polypyrrole-gelatin aerogels, containing magnetic barium ferrite (BaFe) particles, (PPy-G-BaFe) were synthesized by oxidative cryopolymerization and used as adsorbents for the removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous media. The removal was performed at pH 4, which was shown to be the optimal value, due to HCrO being the dominant species in these conditions and its more favorable adsorption and reduction compared to CrO, present at pH > 4. It was found that the presence of magnetic BaFe particles had no effect on the adsorption performance of PPy aerogels in terms of capacity and kinetics, which was attributed to its relatively low content in the composite. After the adsorption, the presence of chromium in the composites was confirmed by EDX and its electrostatic interaction with the adsorbent was pointed at by vibrational spectroscopy, corresponding to the accepted adsorption mechanism. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order model pointing at chemisorption being the rate-limiting step. The adsorption isotherm data was best fitting with the Temkin model. The maximum adsorption capacity, calculated using the Langmuir model, was 255.8 mg g (the maximum experimental value was 161.6 mg g). Additionally, the possibility of Cr(VI) adsorption in the presence of Cl, Br, NO and SO as interfering ions was shown.

Article Synopsis
  • The paper explores how to economically optimize the preparation of ferrite powder for manufacturing hard ferrite magnets by tweaking the feedstock and calcination temperature.
  • Granulates were heated in the 1100-1300 °C range and then crushed to achieve a specific particle size, with the final product showing various particle shapes and sizes confirmed through electron microscopy.
  • The best magnetic performance occurred at 1300 °C, with notable findings on the effects of strontium and barium on magnetic properties, and improvements were possible by further reducing particle size for barium-based ferrites.

Using magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) for extracorporeal heating applications results in higher field strength and, therefore, particles of higher coercivity can be used, compared to intracorporeal applications. In this study, we report the synthesis and characterization of barium hexa-ferrite (BaFeO) nanoparticles as potential particles for magnetic heating. Using a precipitation method followed by high-temperature calcination, we first studied the influence of varied synthesis parameters on the particles' properties.

Surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (SALDI-MS) has received considerable attention as a complementary approach to matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS), offering substantial potential for analyzing molecules in the low-mass region. Herein, we propose a facile method, a microreactor for the synthesis of two types of barium ferrite (BaFeO and BaFeO) nanoparticles (NPs) within moving droplets for detecting antihistamine (AH) drugs in oral fluid (OF). The synthesized BaFeO and BaFeO NPs exhibited small particle size, good ultraviolet absorption, and excellent performance in SALDI-MS, as determined by survival yield measurements.

Programmable, Changeable, Origami Cellulose Films for Magnetically Controllable Soft Robots.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

June 2023

Key Laboratory of Bio-Based Material Science & Technology (Ministry of Education), Northeast Forestry University, Harbin 150040, China.

Magnetic soft robots composed of stimuli-responsive materials are promising for biomedical engineering applications; however, typical responsive materials are fabricated with nondegradable polymeric substrates. In this study, we report a flexible, biodegradable, and magnetically sensitive cellulose film (M-film) that can be utilized for magnetically controllable soft robots (M-robots) with programmable locomotion, cargo delivery, and remote wireless operation functions. The M-film with good foldability, origami, and magnetic properties is synthesized by a simple paper-making process using cellulose nanofibers, additive sodium alginate, and BaFeO particles.
