Article Abstract

Unlabelled: Introduction The diagnosis of glomerular diseases is primarily based on visual assessment of histologic patterns. Semi-quantitative scoring of active and chronic lesions is often required to assess individual characteristics of the disease. Reproducibility of the visual scoring systems remains debatable, while digital and machine-learning technologies present opportunities to detect, classify and quantify glomerular lesions, also considering their inter- and intraglomerular heterogeneity.

Materials And Methods: We performed a cross-validated comparison of three modifications of a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based approach for recognition and intraglomerular quantification of nine main glomerular patterns of injury. Reference values provided by two nephropathologists were used for validation. For each glomerular image, visual attention heatmaps were generated with a probability of class attribution for further intraglomerular quantification. The quality of classifier-produced heatmaps was evaluated by intersection over union metrics (IoU) between predicted and ground truth localization heatmaps.

Results: A proposed spatially guided modification of the CNN classifier achieved the highest glomerular pattern classification accuracies, with area under curve (AUC) values up to 0.981. With regards to heatmap overlap area and intraglomerular pattern quantification, the spatially guided classifier achieved a significantly higher generalized mean IoU value compared to single-multiclass and multiple-binary classifiers.

Conclusions: We propose a spatially guided CNN classifier that in our experiments reveals the potential to achieve high accuracy for the localization of intraglomerular patterns.

Objectives: To investigate the performance of a deep learning (DL) model for segmenting cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans taken before and after mandibular horizontal guided bone regeneration (GBR) to evaluate hard tissue changes.

Materials And Methods: The proposed SegResNet-based DL model was trained on 70 CBCT scans. It was tested on 10 pairs of pre- and post-operative CBCT scans of patients who underwent mandibular horizontal GBR.

Computerized chest tomography (CT)-guided screening in populations at risk for lung cancer has increased the detection of preinvasive subsolid nodules, which progress to solid invasive adenocarcinoma. Despite the clinical significance, there is a lack of effective therapies for intercepting the progression of preinvasive to invasive adenocarcinoma. To uncover determinants of early disease emergence and progression, we used integrated single-cell approaches, including scRNA-seq, multiplexed imaging mass cytometry and spatial transcriptomics, to construct the first high-resolution map of the composition, lineage/functional states, developmental trajectories and multicellular crosstalk networks from microdissected non-solid (preinvasive) and solid compartments (invasive) of individual part-solid nodules.

In North America, raccoon rabies virus (RRV) is a public health concern due to its potential for rapid spread, maintenance in wildlife, and impact on human and domesticated animal health. RRV is an endemic zoonotic pathogen throughout the eastern USA. In 1991, an outbreak of RRV in Fairfield County, Connecticut, spread through the state and eventually throughout the Northeast and into Canada.

F-Florbetaben (FBB) uptake in the supratentorial cortex is indicative of amyloid positivity. Due to PET's low spatial resolution, image noise, and spill-over of signal from adjacent white-matter into gray-matter, there are inconsistencies in ratings among trained readers. A set of 264 F-Florbetaben (amyloid) PET/MRI exams were reconstructed using conventional ordered subset expectation maximization (OSEM) method and MR-guided block sequential regularized expectation maximization (MRgBSREM) method.

Gas bubbles, commonly used in medical ultrasound (US), witness advancements with nanobubbles (NB), providing improved capabilities over microbubbles (MB). NBs offer enhanced penetration into capillaries and the ability to extravasate into tumors following systemic injection, alongside prolonged circulation and persistent acoustic contrast. Low-frequency insonation (<1 MHz) with NBs holds great potential in inducing significant bioeffects, making the monitoring of their acoustic response critical to achieving therapeutic goals.
