This article highlights the indispensable role of research and publishing in promoting evidence-based practices, facilitating professional growth, and shaping public health policy. Drawing on historical and contemporary examples, I examine the challenges faced by physician-scientists, such as ethical dilemmas and declining engagement in research, particularly in resource-constrained settings.

Background: While optimal cardiovascular health (CVH) has been linked to a lower risk of dementia, few studies considered individuals' genetic background. We aimed to examine the interaction between CVH and genetic predisposition on dementia risk among individuals with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD).
Methods: We included 30,818 ASCVD patients from the UK Biobank.

Background: Depression is often cited as a major modifiable risk factor for dementia, though the relative contributions of a true causal relationship, reverse causality and confounding factors remain unclear. This study applied a subset of the Bradford Hill criteria for causation to depression and dementia including strength of effect, specificity, temporality, biological gradient and coherence.
Methods: A total of 491 557 participants in UK Biobank aged between 40 and 69 at enrolment and followed up for a mean duration of 12.

: Cellular biobanks are of great interest for performing studies finalized in the development of personalized approaches for genetic diseases, including β-thalassemia and sickle cell disease (SCD), important diseases affecting the hematopoietic system. These inherited genetic diseases are characterized by a global distribution and the need for intensive health care. The aim of this report is to present an update on the composition of a cellular Thal-Biobank, to describe its utilization since 2016, to present data on its application in studies on fetal hemoglobin induction and on gene editing, and to discuss its employment as a "unique tool" during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed a global deficiency of systematic, data-driven guidance to identify high-risk individuals. Here, we illustrate the utility of routinely recorded medical history to predict the risk for 1741 diseases across clinical specialties and support the rapid response to emerging health threats such as COVID-19. We developed a neural network to learn from health records of 502,489 UK Biobank participants.
