In this exploratory study, Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) were utilized for the first time to detect botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) based on localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), acting as biosensors. Monolayers of Au NPs were initially transferred onto a transparent polymer substrate using the LB technique. This substrate was then used as the base material for subsequent depositions of capping ligands, and eventually, the BoNT at different concentrations. Upon each deposition, LSPR signals were recorded employing UV-Vis spectroscopy. As a result, it was demonstrated that the LB films transferred at a surface pressure of 35 mN m were the optimal choice, capable of detecting BoNT at a concentration as low as 1 pg ml. Furthermore, it was discovered that the formation of Au NP clusters reduced the sensing capacity of the LB films. This sensor offers advantages such as easy fabrication and a quick detection process that utilizes visible light.
The administration of botulinum toxin A (BTA) into the gastric wall has emerged as a novel endoscopic bariatric procedure. Although over 20 years have elapsed since the initial human trial of intragastric BTA injection, considerable debate remains surrounding the safety, efficacy, and procedural instructions of this approach. The current literature exhibits discrepancies in the methodologies employed across studies, including differences in the dosage of BTA administered, injection site, number and depth of injections, post-procedural dietary modifications, and follow-up duration.
Botulinum toxin (BT) therapy is the therapy of choice for most forms of dystonia. We want to describe its costs, if all dystonia patients in Germany would have access to optimal BT therapy. For this, we combined the latest data on epidemiology of dystonia and dosing of BT therapy for dystonia.
Spasmodic dysphonia (SD) is now generally considered to be a task-specific focal dystonia. For the first time, we wanted to explore the relationship between SD and dystonia from a combined neurological and phoniatric perspective. For this, we studied 115 patients with non-psychogenic SD by a combined neurological and phoniatric evaluation.
To evaluate the effects of the botulinum toxin (BTX-A) on muscle tone and joint mobility in children with congenital Zika syndrome (CZS). This was a longitudinal case series carried out in a Support Center for Children with Microcephaly, located in Northeastern Brazil. We collected data from the institution's medical records, containing information about muscle tone and passive joint mobility measured at least 3 months before and 4 weeks after BTX-A application.
This review evaluates the risks and benefits of botulinum toxin (BTX) therapy for treating bromhidrosis. A search was conducted across six databases, including clinical trials comparing BTX therapy with BTX-free controls. The analyzed outcomes included pooled adverse events (AEs), treatment success, ≥ 50% overall improvement, and recurrence rates.
