The performance of adaptive acoustic localization methodologies depends on the quality of the covariance matrix being inverted. This paper demonstrates a technique to improve covariance estimation using the principles of lucky signal processing and the cumulative coherence. Lucky processing, popularized in astro-photography, is a technique that increases signal quality by selectively keeping only a small fraction from a pool of potential snapshots. Cumulative coherence, a measure of how well a set of vectors is described by its subsets, provides the measure of "data quality" that enables the lucky processing. This approach was applied to covariance estimation on an acoustic array by taking a fixed duration sample of data and creating a dense set of snapshots with higher than usual overlap. From these densely sampled snapshots, the "luckiest" ones were found using cumulative coherence, and the covariance was averaged as normal. Using data from the SWellEX-96 experiment, this new estimator was compared with standard practice. It was found that the lucky covariance estimate was successful at adaptive matched field processing and produced a less ambiguous processor output than the conventional estimator. The lucky covariance estimate had a higher estimated signal-to-noise ratio, especially when the source was at longer ranges from the array.

We propose a universal method based on deep reinforcement learning (specifically, soft actor-critic) to control the chimera state in the coupled oscillators. The policy for control is learned by maximizing the expectation of the cumulative reward in the reinforcement learning framework. With the aid of the local order parameter, we design a class of reward functions for controlling the chimera state, specifically confining the spatial position of coherent and incoherent domains to any desired lateral position of oscillators.

Purpose: To report a case of pentosan polysulfate sodium (PPS) maculopathy with cystoid macular edema (CME) with relatively low cumulative PPS exposure and a history of concurrent hydroxychloroquine use.

Observations: A 46-year-old female was treated with PPS daily for 10 years, and hydroxychloroquine intermittently over a span of five years, actively taking hydroxychloroquine for a sum of three years during PPS therapy. Despite a low risk for toxicity based on the cumulative exposure to either medication, fundoscopic examination and multimodal imaging revealed severe PPS maculopathy with CME two and a half years post-PPS cessation.

Purpose: To report a case of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) retinopathy after long-term exposure in a 23-year-old male.

Methods: Multimodal imaging including fundus photography, fundus autofluorescence (FAF), spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), and en face OCT were performed, in addition to functional testing with full-field electroretinography (ERG) and Humphrey visual field (HVF).

Results: A 23-year-old man with a history of juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus and HCQ treatment for 13 years at a dosage of 200 mg/d (cumulative dose: 949 grams) presented to the retinal clinic (DS).

A novel, to the best of our knowledge, frequency offset estimation (FOE) scheme is proposed and demonstrated for coherent digital subcarrier multiplexing (DSCM) systems, where frequency offset (FO) leads to severe filtering damage of subcarriers due to bandwidth limitations. The scheme exploits the symmetry of the signal spectrum, which naturally arises from the transmitter's frequency response and introduces frequency skewness as a cost function to search for FO. To achieve fast FOE, the false position (FP) method is employed to iteratively compute frequency shifts.
