Published: March 2024

The primordial anlage of sublingual gland was first noticed as a solid epithelial bud from oral epithelium at the 24 day of foetal development. The terminal buds were arranged in the form of clusters with undifferentiated epithelial cells and terminated in a bulb-like structure in the 30-day-old sheep foetus. On the 37 day, lumenization and branching of the main cord was noticed. The primary septa were observed from the 55 day onwards which resulted in the formation of lobulation on the 60 day. The capsule formation was initiated by aggregation of mesenchymal tissue on the 63 day. On the 100 day, terminal tubules differentiated to form secretory end pieces. Tubular portions formed intercalated and striated ducts. Predominantly mucous type of acinar cells was seen from the 110 day onwards with myoepithelial cells. The number of lobules increased with increase in parenchyma from 130 day onwards. Micrometrical studies revealed that the mean diameter of acini, intercalated, striated and large ducts was increased with advancement of age and significant differences were observed between groups. Localization of acidic and neutral mucopolysaccharides were observed in mucous and goblet cells. Fine lipid droplets were observed in intralobular and interlobular connective tissue however, phospholipids were observed in cell membrane of acini and ducts. The current investigation provides microstructural standards for the organogenesis of the sublingual gland of miniature sheep and can lay the foundation for further studies in the morphological investigation of salivary gland development.

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP), including pigeon breeder's lung (PBL), often progresses from acute inflammation to fibrosis, impairing lung function and limiting targeted therapeutic strategies. Mechanistic studies on PBL progression are limited by the lack of preclinical animal models and a predominant focus on patient data. This study explores the immunopathological characteristics of all stages of PBL in mice and evaluates the therapeutic potential of human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) during the non-fibrotic stage.

Introduction: Following two weeks of application of the triple combination therapy of Elexacaftor (E), Tezacaftor (T), and Ivacaftor (I) known as ETI, substantial pulmonary improvement in patients with cystic fibrosis is well-documented. However, few detailed data are available on the action of this treatment over the course of these first 14 days.

Methods: In this prospective study (NCT05599230), 20 patients aged≥12 years, all of them eligible for ETI, were recruited at the initiation of treatment.

Background: Midges are widely distributed globally. They can transmit numerous serious diseases as well as trigger an allergic reaction in the host. Their saliva contains a variety of proteins that act as sensitizers to stimulate the host's immune response, leading to IgE-mediated allergic symptoms.

January 2025

Department of Internal Medicine, Maastricht University Medical Centre+, CARIM School for Cardiovascular Diseases, Maastricht University, Maastricht, The Netherlands.

Background And Importance: The emergency department (ED) is a hectic place, where many critically ill patients are treated. For residents working in the ED, this environment may be demanding.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the [1] cognitive load experienced by residents working in the ED, and [2] differences in cognitive load during the day.

Background And Objectives: Low-birth weight, premature infants often have severe intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), which can result in posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus (PHH), sometimes requiring cerebrospinal fluid diversion. Initial temporizing management of PHH includes placement of a ventriculosubgaleal shunt (VSGS) or ventricular access device (VAD). Studies have found similar permanent shunt conversion rates between VSGS and VAD but were limited by sample scope and size.
