Efficient grating couplers (GCs) for perfectly vertical coupling are difficult to realize due to the second-order back reflection. In this study, apodized GCs (AGCs) are presented for achieving perfectly-vertical coupling to 220 nm thick silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguides in the C-band. We compare the performance of the AGCs to that of uniform GCs (UGCs) and demonstrate the superiority of the former. The AGCs were obtained through inverse design using gradient-based optimization and were found to effectively suppress back reflection and exhibit better matching to the Gaussian beam profile. The design and measurement results show that AGCs have a 3 dB lower coupling loss than UGCs. We fabricated focusing AGCs by electron beam lithography with a single, 70 nm shallow etch and a minimum feature size of 100 nm, which makes them compatible with CMOS technology. The AGCs achieved a coupling efficiency of -5.86 dB for perfectly vertical coupling. Overall, our results demonstrate the potential of AGCs for achieving high-performance coupling in the C-band on the SOI platform.

The polymorphic nature of InSe leads to excellent phase-dependent physical properties including ferroelectricity, photoelectricity, and especially the intriguing phase change ability, making the precise phase modulation of InSe of fundamental importance but very challenging. Here, the growth of InSe with desired-phase is realized by temperature-controlled selenization of van der Waals (vdW) layered bulk γ-InSe. Detailed results of Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and state-of-the-art spherical aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy (Cs-TEM) clearly and consistently show that β-InSe, 3R α-InSe, and 2H α-InSe can be perfectly obtained at ≈270, ≈300, and ≈600 °C, respectively.

Background: Reliable lameness thresholds for vertical head displacement for trotting on a circular path and on different surfaces have yet to be defined. Withers movement in lame horses could help improve the diagnostic accuracy of sensor technology.
Objectives: To define head movement lameness threshold ranges and describe the relationship between head and withers movement during trotting under different circumstances in sound and forelimb lame horses.

Monolayer jacutingaite (PtHgSe) exhibits remarkable properties, including significant spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and a tunable band gap, attributed to its buckled honeycomb geometry and the presence of heavy atoms. In this study, we explore the spin- and valley-dependent anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) in jacutingaite under the influence of a vertical electric field, off-resonance circularly polarized light (OCPL), and an antiferromagnetic exchange field. Our findings, within the low-energy approximation, reveal the emergence of a perfectly spin-polarized ANE with the application of appropriate OCPL and a perfectly valley-polarized ANE under an antiferromagnetic exchange field.

Timely diagnosis of vertical Trypanosoma cruzi infections involves microscopy-based detection of circulating parasites from peripheral blood, which lacks sensitivity and is operator dependent. Consequently, most children born to T. cruzi-infected mothers are required to undergo serological testing after 9 months, which risks loss to follow-up.

A perfectly vertical grating coupler is a valuable packaging technique that is convenient for chip-to-chip optical interconnects and has low risks of mechanical failure during testing. However, SWMIR grating couplers have fewer periods to tailor the diffracted light, hindering the improvement of bandwidths and backreflections.
