Awareness of neurological sequelae of dengue fever is increasing. However, as this case illustrates, there is a diagnostic conundrum in determining whether certain features are in keeping with dengue encephalopathy or dengue encephalitis. Further consensus is required.

Acute leukoencephalopathy with restricted diffusion (ALERD) is an emerging clinico-radiological syndrome marked by sudden onset encephalopathy and characteristic restricted diffusion in the subcortical white matter on MRI. While typically linked to other viral etiologies, its association with dengue fever is not well known and is rarely documented in the literature. In this report, we describe a rare case of ALERD associated with dengue fever in a young patient, emphasizing clinical features, neuroimaging findings, management, and outcome.

Objectives: Arboviruses pose a significant global health challenge. This study investigated the seroprevalence of major human arboviral infections, including yellow fever (YFV), dengue (DENV), Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF), Rift Valley fever (RVF), West Nile virus (WNV), and chikungunya (CHIK), in Darfur region from September to December 2018. ELISA-IgM was used to detect antibodies.

Arthropod-borne viruses or arboviruses, including West Nile virus (WNV), dengue virus (DENV), and Zika virus (ZIKV) pose significant threats to public health. It is imperative to develop novel methods to control these mosquito-borne viral infections. We previously showed that insulin/insulin-like growth factor-1 signaling (IIS)-dependent activation of ERK and JAK-STAT signaling has significant antiviral activity in insects and human cells.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the prevalence and mortality predictors of pediatric acute liver failure (PALF) due to dengue with a focus on children admitted to a Vietnamese PICU from 2013 to 2022.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 459 children, finding an 18.3% prevalence of PALF and an 8.5% in-hospital mortality rate among patients with severe hepatitis.
  • Key predictors of mortality included hepatic biomarkers like high international normalized ratio (INR) levels and reduced consciousness, with the study utilizing advanced statistical models to assess risk factors.
