Purpose: Pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) is a neurotrophic glycoprotein secreted by the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) that supports retinal photoreceptor health. Deficits in PEDF are associated with increased inflammation and retinal degeneration in aging and diabetic retinopathy. We hypothesized that light-induced stress in C57BL/6J mice deficient in PEDF would lead to increased retinal neuronal and RPE defects, impaired expression of neurotrophic factor Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), and overactivation of Galectin-3-mediated inflammatory signaling.

Hourglass-shaped europium cluster-based secondary building unit in metal-organic framework for photocatalytic wastewater purification and sterilization via enhanced reactive oxygen species production.

J Colloid Interface Sci

February 2025

School of Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences, State Key Laboratory for Chemistry and Molecular Engineering of Medicinal Resources, Guangxi Normal University, Guilin 541004, PR China. Electronic address:

A large number of diseases caused by water pollution have become a global public health issue, and the development and construction of innovative and efficient photocatalytic systems for water remediation is vital to improve water quality and prevent bacteria-induced diseases. Herein, a europium-based metal-organic framework (Eu-MOF) was self-assembled with complex hourglass-shaped Eu clusters as secondary building units (SBUs), achieving excellent photoinduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation ability. Moreover, Eu-MOF can quickly and efficiently degrade organic dyes and kill a variety of bacteria under low-power light irradiation conditions.

Transparent microelectrode arrays have proven useful in neural sensing, offering a clear interface for monitoring brain activity without compromising high spatial and temporal resolution. The current landscape of transparent electrode technology faces challenges in developing durable, highly transparent electrodes while maintaining low interface impedance and prioritizing scalable processing and fabrication methods. To address these limitations, we introduce artifact-resistant transparent MXene microelectrode arrays optimized for high spatiotemporal resolution recording of neural activity.

Bottom Contact Engineering for Ambient Fabrication of >25% Durable Perovskite Solar Cells.

Adv Mater

October 2024

School of Environment and Energy, State Key Laboratory of Luminescent Materials and Devices, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Solid Wastes Pollution Control and Recycling, South China University of Technology, Guangzhou, 510000, China.

The bottom contact in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is easy to cause deep trap states and severe instability issues, especially under maximum power point tracking (MPPT). In this study, sodium gluconate (SG) is employed to disperse tin oxide (SnO) nanoparticles (NPs) and regulate the interface contact at the buried interface. The SG-SnO electron transfer layer (ETL) enabled the deposition of pinhole-free perovskite films in ambient air and improved interface contact by bridging effect.
