Aim: To improve the standard three-port vitrectomy for establishing and evaluating an endotamponade model in rabbits.

Methods: Three ports were prepared near the third eyelid of rabbits, and the infusion port was placed at the inferior nasal quadrant with the inserted cannula linking with a self-designed handheld rigid infusion catheter. All right eyes of rabbits underwent a modified 25-gauge vitrectomy and were subsequently filled with balanced salt solution, silicone oil, and eight-arm polyethylene glycols (8-arm PEGs) hydrogel separately for comparison. Ophthalmic examinations were performed regularly to record the changes after the surgery.

Results: Successful vitrectomy was achieved among 44 chinchilla rabbits. The mean operation time was 4.51±1.25min. Four eyes (9.1%) presented limited lens touch and two eyes (4.5%) showed retinal touch during surgery. Incision leakage was found in three eyes (6.8%) after surgery. There was no endophthalmitis, hemorrhage, or retinal detachment during the observation period and ophthalmic examinations after the implantation of vitreous substitutes.

Conclusion: The modified technique of the standard vitrectomy applied in the endotamponade model in rabbits shows excellent safety and practicality.

Hemorrhagic shock is a significant cause of trauma-related mortality. Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) is a less-invasive aortic occlusion maneuver for severe hemorrhagic shock but potentially inducing oxidative stress injuries. In an animal model, this study investigated hydrogen gas inhalation therapy's potential to mitigate post-REBOA ischemia-reperfusion injuries (IRIs).

Vitrectomy with silicone oil (SO) endotamponade is an effective treatment for vision-threatening retinal diseases. However, unexplained vision impairment has been reportedly critical side effects. Previously, we reported that the eyes with ocular toxoplasmosis showed retinal ferroptosis with the clinical sign of reduced intravitreal iron (Fe).

Purpose: To compare the anatomical and functional outcomes of pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) alone versus PPV with the addition of a scleral buckle in treating inferior rhegmatogenous retinal detachments (RRDs).

Methods: Comparative, retrospective cohort study including patients who were diagnosed with primary inferior RRD, defined as RRD with one or more retinal tears located between 4 and 8 hours, and divided into two treatment groups. Group 1 patients were treated with PPV and gas tamponade alone, whereas group 2 patients were treated with PPV, gas tamponade and the addition of an encirclement band.

Background: Intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) and resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) are two endovascular intervention methods for circulatory support. The aim of this study was to compare the hemodynamic effects of simultaneous mechanical chest compressions (MCC) with IABP, REBOA and those with only MCC (overall and detailed in the MCC cycle) and return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in experimental non-traumatic cardiac arrests (CA).

Method: CA was electrically induced (ventricular fibrillation) in 24 anesthetized pigs, which then were randomized to MCC synchronized IABP (n = 8), total occluded REBOA (n = 8), or control (n = 8).

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to examine how total REBOA (tREBOA) affects cerebral blood flow and intracranial pressure (ICP) in pigs during controlled hemorrhagic shock and subsequent resuscitation.
  • Researchers used 22 anesthetized pigs, splitting them into two groups: one with elevated ICP (EICPG) and one with normal ICP (NICPG), and monitored their vital parameters before and after inducing shock.
  • Results showed that tREBOA effectively restored cerebral perfusion in both groups, even with periods of impaired autoregulation, confirming its potential as a lifesaving intervention during critical resuscitation scenarios.
