Oxidative Dissolution of Lanthanide Metals Ce and Ho in Molten GaCl.

Published: May 2024

Gallium trichloride (GaCl) was used as a solvent for the oxidative dissolution of the lanthanide (Ln) metals cerium (Ce) and holmium (Ho). Reactions were performed at temperatures above 100 °C in sealed vessels to maintain the liquid phase for GaCl during the oxidizing reactions. The best results were obtained from reactions using 8 equiv of GaCl to metal where the inorganic complexes [Ga][Ln(GaCl)] [Ln = Ce (), Ho ()] could be isolated. Recrystallization of and employing fluorobenzene (CHF) produced [Ga(η-CHF)][Ln(GaCl)] [Ln = Ce (), Ho ()] where reversible η coordination of CHF to [Ga] was observed. All complexes were characterized through elemental analysis (F and Cl), IR and UV-vis-near-IR spectroscopies, and both solution and solid-state NMR techniques.

Considering factors such as crustal reserves, atomic mass, redox potential and energy density, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are regarded as the most promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Transition metal-based layered oxides, especially typical NaMnO, stand out among cathode materials due to their low cost and high energy density. However, NaMnO cathodes face several challenges, including Jahn-Teller distortion, manganese dissolution, structural collapse, irreversible phase transition and significant capacity loss.

In cold environments, such as polar regions and high latitudes, the freezing of aqueous solutions plays a crucial role in releasing and transforming nutrients, organic compounds, and trace gases. Freezing processes typically affect biogeochemical cycles and environmental processes by reducing the rate of chemical reactions. However, substantial studies have found that some chemical reactions may accelerate unexpectedly under freezing conditions.

Evidence for low bioavailability of dietary nanoparticulate cerium in a freshwater food chain.

ANSTO, Nuclear Science and Technology Division, Lucas Heights, NSW 2234, Australia.

Radioactive Ce in ionic (I-Ce), nano (N-Ce, 11 ± 9 nm mean primary particle size ± standard deviation) and micron-sized (M-Ce, 530 ± 440 µm) forms associated with natural and artificial diets in natural river water and synthetic freshwater were used to measure the real-time biokinetics of dietary Ce assimilation in a freshwater food chain. The model food chain consisted of microalgae (Raphidocelis subcapitata), snails (Potamopyrgus antipodarum) and prawns (Macrobrachium australiense). Pulse-chase experiments showed that 91-100 % of all forms of cerium associated with all diets and water types were eliminated from the digestive system of the snail and prawn within 24 h, with no detectable cerium assimilation.

In this manuscript, the effects of two extracts from were tested: (a) an extract titrated to 49.7% of andrographolide and obtained from leaves of the plant: (b) the pure andrographolide titrated to 99%. The extracts were dissolved in 1-butanol and tested on tumor lines (MCF7 and SH-SY5Y) and the non-tumor line (Huvec) to understand the effects on cell proliferation.
