The unique diffraction geometry of ESRF beamline ID06-LVP offers continuous static 2D or azimuthally resolving data collections over all accessible solid angles available to the tooling geometry. The system is built around a rotating custom-built Pilatus3 CdTe 900k-W detector from Dectris, in a configuration equivalent to three butted 300k devices. As a non-standard geometry, here the method of alignment, correction and subsequent integration for any data collected over all solid angles accessible, or over any azimuthal range contained therein, are provided and illustrated by parameterizing and extending existing pyFAI routines. At 1° integrated intervals, and typical distances (2.0 m), the system covers an area of near 2.5 m (100 Mpx square equivalent), to 0.65 Å resolution, at 53 keV from a total dataset of some 312 Mpx. Standard FWHMs of SRM660a LaB vary from 0.005° to 0.01°, depending on beam size, energy and sample dimensions, and are sampled at an elevated rate. The azimuthal range per static frame ranges from <20° to ∼1° over the full range of the detector surface. A full 2θ-intensity data collection at static azimuth takes 1-3 s typically, and can be reduced to ms rates for measurements requiring time-rate determination. A full solid-angle collection can be completed in a minute. Sample detector distances are accessible from 1.6 m to 4.0 m.

As a non-destructive and rapid technique, optical scatterometry has gained widespread use in the measurement of film thickness and optical constants. The recent advances in deep learning have presented new and powerful approaches to the resolution of inverse scattering problems. However, the application of deep-neural-network-assisted optical scatterometry for nanostructures still faces significant challenges, including poor stability, limited functionalities, and high equipment requirements.

The coherent coupling between electronic excitations and vibrational modes of molecules largely affects the optical and charge transport properties of organic semiconductors and molecular solids. To analyze these couplings by means of ultrafast spectroscopy, highly ordered crystalline films with large domains are particularly suitable because the domains can be addressed individually, hence allowing azimuthal polarization-resolved measurements. Impressive examples of this are highly ordered crystalline thin films of perfluoropentacene (PFP) molecules, which adopt different molecular orientations on different alkali halide substrates.

Significance: Azimuth-resolved optical scattering signals obtained from cell nuclei are sensitive to changes in their internal refractive index profile. These two-dimensional signals can therefore offer significant insights into chromatin organization.
Aim: We aim to determine whether two-dimensional scattering signals can be used in an inverse scheme to extract the spatial correlation length and extent of subnuclear refractive index fluctuations to provide quantitative information on chromatin distribution.
Endoscopic angle-resolved light scattering methods have been developed for early cancer detection but they typically require multi-element coherent fiber optic bundles to recover scattering distributions from tissues. Recent work has focused on using a single multimode fiber (MMF) to measure angle resolved scattering but this approach has practical limitations to overcome before clinical translation. Here we address these limitations by proposing an MMF-based endoscope capable of measuring angular scattering patterns suitable for determining structure.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFExperimental insight into the elementary processes underlying charge transfer across interfaces has blossomed with the wide-spread availability of ultra-high vacuum (UHV) setups that allow the preparation and characterization of solid surfaces with well-defined molecular adsorbates over a wide range of temperatures. Within the last 15 years, such insights have extended to charge transfer heterostructures containing solids overlain by one or more atomically thin two dimensional materials. Such systems are of wide potential interest both because they appear to offer a path to separate surface reactivity from bulk chemical properties and because some offer completely novel physics, unrealizable in bulk three dimensional solids.
