Eukaryotic cells' proliferation and growth are controlled by the target of rapamycin kinase (TOR). TOR usually activates in favorable energy and nutritional circumstances. This is challenged by recent research, suggesting that plant cells optimized for nutrient absorption in low nutritional conditions may activate the TOR pathway in a polarized manner.

The widespread use of non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) has turned prenatal diagnostics for chromosomal abnormalities from the exception to the rule. A common finding is the suspicion of trisomy 21 in the fetus, which should result in the offer of multidisciplinary counseling. The significance of this for decision-making by the pregnant woman has not yet been investigated.

Background: In 2022, a nationally representative longitudinal survey in the USA found concerningly high prevalences of support for and personal willingness to engage in political violence, but those prevalences decreased in 2023. This study examines changes in those prevalences from 2023 to 2024, an election year in the USA.

Practitioners of medicine have a moral as well as legal obligation to serve their patients to the best of their ability, and in recent years the medical profession throughout the world has affirmed this principle. Background And Objective: Despite significant investments in the normalization and the standardization of Electronic Health Records (EHRs), free text is still the rule rather than the exception in clinical notes. The use of free text has implications in data reuse methods used for supporting clinical research since the query mechanisms used in cohort definition and patient matching are mainly based on structured data and clinical terminologies. This study aims to develop a method for the secondary use of clinical text by: (a) using Natural Language Processing (NLP) for tagging clinical notes with biomedical terminology; and (b) designing an ontology that maps and classifies all the identified tags to various terminologies and allows for running phenotyping queries.

Within the reductionist framework, researchers in the special sciences formulate key terms and concepts and try to explain them with lower-level science terms and concepts. For example, behavioural vision scientists describe contrast perception with a psychometric function, in which the perceived brightness increases logarithmically with the physical contrast of a light patch (the Weber-Fechner law). Visual neuroscientists describe the output of neural circuits with neurometric functions.
