Bidirectional recurrent neural network approach for predicting cervical cancer recurrence and survival.

Sci Rep

December 2024

School of Engineering and Technology, Sunway University, No. 5, Jalan Universiti, Bandar Sunway, Petaling Jaya, 47500, Selangor Darul Ehsan, Malaysia.

Cervical cancer is a deadly disease in women globally. There is a greater chance of getting rid of cervical cancer in case of earliest diagnosis. But for some patients, there is a chance of recurrence.

Reservoir computing (RC) is a powerful machine learning algorithm for information processing. Despite numerous optical implementations, its speed and scalability remain limited by the need to establish recurrent connections and achieve efficient optical nonlinearities. This work proposes a streamlined photonic RC design based on a new paradigm, called next-generation RC, which overcomes these limitations.

Pattern memory cannot be completely and truly realized in deep neural networks.

Sci Rep

December 2024

School of Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science, Jiangnan University, Wuxi, 214122, China.

The unknown boundary issue, between superior computational capability of deep neural networks (DNNs) and human cognitive ability, has becoming crucial and foundational theoretical problem in AI evolution. Undoubtedly, DNN-empowered AI capability is increasingly surpassing human intelligence in handling general intelligent tasks. However, the absence of DNN's interpretability and recurrent erratic behavior remain incontrovertible facts.

Background: Bladder carcinoma is a type of urological tumor with high risks of recurrence and progression. The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index has demonstrated significant promise as a prognostic marker for metabolic health in different types of cancer. Further research is needed to explore the relationships among non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC), the TyG index, and its prognostic importance.

Background: Metastatic retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (LND) for nodal recurrence is applied for a variety of cancers, such as urological, gynaecological and rectal cancer. Precise localisation and resection of these lymph nodes (LNs) during surgery can be challenging, especially after previous radiotherapy or surgery. The objective of this study was to assess the added value of surgical navigation for targeted LND in the retroperitoneum.
