Selective autophagy receptors play both proviral and antiviral roles during plant-virus interaction. However, little is known about the balance between such contradictory dual roles of these receptors. Tong et al. have deciphered the temporal regulation of antiviral and antiplant roles of a selective autophagy receptor, a virus-induced small peptide 1 (VISP1).

Background: Staphylococcus aureus, a known contributor to non-healing wounds, releases vesicles (SAVs) that influence the delicate balance of host-pathogen interactions. Efferocytosis, a process by which macrophages clear apoptotic cells, plays a key role in successful wound healing. However, the precise impact of SAVs on wound repair and efferocytosis remains unknown.

S100P is a ferroptosis suppressor to facilitate hepatocellular carcinoma development by rewiring lipid metabolism.

Ferroptosis is a newly identified programmed cell death induced by iron-driven lipid peroxidation and implicated as a potential approach for tumor treatment. However, emerging evidence indicates that hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells are generally resistant to ferroptosis and the underlying molecular mechanism is poorly understood. Here, our study confirms that S100 calcium binding protein P (S100P), which is significantly up-regulated in ferroptosis-resistant HCC cells, efficiently inhibits ferroptosis.

Phase separation of initiation hubs on cargo is a trigger switch for selective autophagy.

Nat Cell Biol

Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, ZBMZ, Faculty of Medicine, University of Freiburg, Freiburg, Germany.

Autophagy is a key cellular quality control mechanism. Nutrient stress triggers bulk autophagy, which nonselectively degrades cytoplasmic material upon formation and liquid-liquid phase separation of the autophagy-related gene 1 (Atg1) complex. In contrast, selective autophagy eliminates protein aggregates, damaged organelles and other cargoes that are targeted by an autophagy receptor.

: The key components of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) are endothelial cells, pericytes, astrocytes, and the capillary basement membrane. The BBB serves as the main barrier for drug delivery to the brain and is the most restrictive endothelial barrier in the body. Nearly all large therapeutic molecules and over 90% of small-molecule drugs cannot cross the BBB.
