Most members of the genus Orthonairovirus, represented by Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus and Nairobi sheep disease virus, are tick-borne, and some have become a public health concern in recent years. Here, we report the isolation and genetic and biological characterization of a new orthonairovirus, designated as "Iwanai Valley virus" (IWVV), from Ixodes ovatus ticks in Hokkaido, Japan. The amino acid sequence of the viral nucleoprotein (NP) was found to be 34-45% identical to those of known orthonairoviruses.

Background: Songling virus (SGLV) within the genus Orthonairovirus, family Nairoviridae, is an emerging tick-borne virus associated with human febrile illness. However, no rapid detection method for SGLV has been established.

Methods: In this study, four primer sets targeting the nucleocapsid protein gene of SGLV were designed for use in the LAMP assay and evaluated to identify the optimal primer set.

Article Synopsis
  • Tacheng tick virus 2 (TcTV-2) is a new tick-borne virus first identified in 2019 from a patient in Xinjiang, China, and has since been found in ticks in multiple countries.
  • A study collected samples from various hosts, including tick-bitten patients and animals, using methods like high-throughput sequencing and ELISA to assess TcTV-2 presence and immunity.
  • The findings showed TcTV-2 in 12.77% of tick-bitten patients and various other animals, with 9.55% of herdsmen testing positive for TcTV-2-specific antibodies, indicating its prevalence and potential public health concern.

Ticks are a hematophagous parasite and a vector of pathogens for numerous human and animal diseases of significant importance. The expansion of tick distribution and the increased risk of tick-borne diseases due to global climate change necessitates further study of the spatial distribution trend of ticks and their potential influencing factors. This study constructed a dataset of tick species distribution in Xinjiang for 60 years based on literature database retrieval and historical data collection (January 1963-January 2023).

Members of the Orthonairovirus genus (family Nairoviridae) include many tick-borne viruses of significant human and animal health impact, with several recently-documented pathogenic viruses lacking sufficient epidemiological information. We screened 215 adult ticks of seven species collected in Bulgaria, Georgia, Latvia and Poland for orthonairoviruses, followed by nanopore sequencing (NS) for genome characterization. Initial generic amplification revealed Sulina virus (SULV, Orthonairovirus sulinaense), for which an updated amplification assay was used, revealing an overall prevalence of 2.
