Discontinuous rigidity transition associated with shear jamming in granular simulations.

We investigate the rigidity transition associated with shear jamming in frictionless, as well as frictional, disk packings in the quasi-static regime and at low shear rates. For frictionless disks, the transition under quasi-static shear is discontinuous, with an instantaneous emergence of a system spanning rigid clusters at the jamming transition. For frictional systems, the transition appears continuous for finite shear rates, but becomes sharper for lower shear rates. In the quasi-static limit, it is discontinuous as in the frictionless case. Thus, our results show that the rigidity transition associated with shear jamming is discontinuous, as demonstrated in the past for isotropic jamming of frictionless particles, and therefore a unifying feature of the jamming transition in general.

Rigid, non-polarizable water models are very efficient from a computational point of view, and some of them have a great ability in predicting experimental properties. There is, however, little room for improvement in simulating water with this strategy, whose main shortcoming is that water molecules do not change their interaction parameters in response to the local molecular landscape. In this work, we propose a novel modeling strategy that involves using two rigid non-polarizable models as states that water molecules can adopt depending on their molecular environment.

Background And Objectives: The middle fossa approaches are tremendously versatile for treating small vestibular schwannomas, selected petroclival meningiomas, midbasilar trunk aneurysms, and lesions of the petrous bone. Our aim was to localize the internal acoustic canal and safely drill the petrous apex with these approaches. This study demonstrates a new method to locate the internal acoustic canal during surgery in the middle fossa.

The paper starts by describing the manufacturing process of cups thermoformed from extruded foils of 80% recycled PET (80r-PET), which comprises heating, hot deep drawing and cooling. The 80r-PET foils were heated up to 120 °C, at heating rates of the order of hundreds °C/min, and deep drawn with multiple punchers, having a depth-to-width ratio exceeding 1:1. After puncher-assisted deformation, the cups were air blown away from the punchers, thus being "frozen" in the deformed state.

The mechanical properties of lignin, an aromatic heteropolymer constituting 20-30% plant biomass, are important to the fabrication and processing of lignin-based sustainable polymeric materials.
