Article Abstract

Lignin, a complex and abundant polymer present in lignocellulosic biomass, holds immense potential as a renewable source for the production of valuable aromatic compounds. However, the efficient depolymerization of lignin into these compounds remains a formidable challenge. Here, we present a promising solution by harnessing polyoxometalates (POMs) catalysts, which exhibit improved catalytic performance and selectivity. We synthesized a series of NiCo@POMs catalysts (POMs: CsPW or CsPMo) and explored their application in the depolymerization of pine lignin, aiming to investigate the influence of different metal species and doping ratios of POMs on catalytic performance. Through meticulous optimization of reaction conditions, we achieved significant yields of valuable aromatic compounds, including methyl vanillate, vanillin, and 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyacetophenone. Furthermore, the NiCo@CsPMo catalyst demonstrated exceptional efficacy in catalyzing the cracking process of C-C and/or C-O bonds in a β-O-4 dimer model compound. Notably, our catalyst exhibited outstanding stability over five cycles, underscoring its suitability as an effective heterogeneous catalyst for cyclic lignin depolymerization. This study sheds light on the potential of POMs-based catalysts for advancing lignin valorization and offers new avenues for sustainable biomass conversion into valuable chemicals.

The biodegradation of organic aromatic compounds in subsurface environments is often hindered by limited dissolved oxygen. While oxygen supplementation can enhance in situ biodegradation, it poses financial and technical challenges. This study explores introducing low-oxygen concentrations in anaerobic environments for efficient contaminant removal, particularly in scenarios where coexisting pollutants are present.

The thermocatalytic conversion of CO with green or blue hydrogen into valuable energy and commodity chemicals such as alcohols, olefins, and aromatics emerges as one of the most promising strategies for mitigating global warming concerns in the future. This process can follow either a CO-modified Fischer-Tropsch synthesis route or a methanol-mediated route, with the latter being favored for its high product selectivity beyond the Anderson-Schulz-Flory distribution. Despite the progress of the CO-led methanol-mediated route over bifunctional metal/zeolite catalysts, challenges persist in developing catalysts with both high activity and selectivity due to the complexity of CO hydrogenation reaction networks and the difficulty in controlling C-O bond activation and C-C bond coupling on multiple active sites within zeolites.

Fluorescent macrocyclic arenes have attracted increasing interest in macrocyclic and supramolecular chemistry due to their exceptional photophysical properties and versatile applications. Classical macrocyclic arenes modified with fluorescent groups at the upper or bottom rims have long provided valuable platforms across various fields. Recently, a large number of novel fluorescent macrocyclic arenes directly composed of polycyclic aromatic or heteroaromatic building blocks including naphthalene, anthracene, tetraphenylethene, pyrene, fluorene, carbazole, acridan, phenothiazine, coumarin,  triphenylamine, benzothiadiazole and so on, have been reported, and they have shown specific fluorescent property, and also exhibited broad applications in molecular recognition, sensing, bioimaging and functional materials.
