Cholinesterase deficiency is a relatively rare condition. However, if unrecognized, this condition can be potentially fatal. The authors present a case report of cholinesterase deficiency and a review of the literature. Discussion of the preoperative evaluation and preventive measures is also included.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) poses a significant public health issue. Despite the fact that today there are several methods of maintenance therapy, one of the most widely used methods is designed to correct the deficiency of acetylcholine. In the search for new potential inhibitors of cholinesterase enzymes, eight new derivatives of 3-oxo- or 2,3-indolo-triterpenic acid conjugated with amino-quinuclidine bicyclic cores were designed and synthesized.

Terminal Schwann cells (TSCs) are capable of regulating acetylcholine (ACh) release at the neuromuscular junction (NMJ). We have identified GABA as a gliotransmitter at mouse NMJs. When ACh activates α7 nicotinic ACh receptor (nAChRs) on TSCs, GABA is released and activates GABA receptors on the nerve terminal that subsequently reduce ACh release.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) can induce cardiac autonomic dysfunction identified by a decreased heart rate variability (HRV) which was linked to oxidative stress, vitamin D deficiency and sleep disturbance. Previous MS studies revealed the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of exogenous melatonin, as well as its benefits on sleep and vitamin D. We aimed to investigate the change in HRV, oxidative stress, systemic inflammation and sleep following melatonin supplementation in MS patients.

Recent studies have demonstrated the direct connections between the skull bone marrow, meninges, and brain. In an effort to explore these connections for the purpose of brain drug delivery, we previously proposed the direct application of CNS drugs into the diploic space between the outer and inner cortex of the skull, namely, intracalvariosseous administration (ICO). It was successfully demonstrated that small molecular to large colloidal drugs can readily reach the brain after ICO in mice and rabbits.
