Published: February 2024

In the development of commercial quadrupole mass spectrometers, there is an interest in improving the performance characteristics such as transmission, resolution, and mass range. In particular, parametric and dipolar resonance excitation of trapping ions are used for linear quadrupole mass filters. Theoretical methods and numerical simulation of ion trajectories were applied for study of ion-optical properties. The review is devoted to description of different excitation methods to improve QMF performance and consists of three parts. The first part presents the results of a linear ion trap simulation for various operating conditions and excitation methods. The second part considers the effects of dipole excitation (DE) on the performance of the quadrupole mass filter. The last part analyzes the formation of stability islands by different methods of quadrupole excitation. To date conditions of mass separation in quadrupole mass filters with sin wave supply were described for stability islands of the first and third stability regions formed by quadrupole and DE. By complicating the electronics such methods allow to overcome the destructive influence of electric field distortions and obtain a resolving power and ion transmission efficiency comparable with commercial devices. At quadrupole resonance excitation by a two-frequency signal, it is possible to reduce the length of electrodes three times without losses in resolution and transmission, which reduces the cost of rod set production with micrometer accuracy. Dipole resonance excitation allows controlling the shape of the mass peak by changing amplitude and phase of the auxiliary AC signal. The main factors affecting the resolving power of a linear ion trap are described theoretically. The numerical modeling results are confirmed by experiment.

Dilated SE-DenseNet for brain tumor MRI classification.

Department of Applied Mathematics, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON, N2L 3G1, Canada.

In the field of medical imaging, particularly MRI-based brain tumor classification, we propose an advanced convolutional neural network (CNN) leveraging the DenseNet-121 architecture, enhanced with dilated convolutional layers and Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE) networks' attention mechanisms. This novel approach aims to improve upon state-of-the-art methods of tumor identification. Our model, trained and evaluated on a comprehensive Kaggle brain tumor dataset, demonstrated superior performance over established convolution-based and transformer-based models: ResNet-101, VGG-19, original DenseNet-121, MobileNet-V2, ViT-L/16, and Swin-B across key metrics: F1-score, accuracy, precision, and recall.

Torsion-Vibration Interactions in S and S Phenylsilane.

College of Science and Engineering, Flinders University, GPO Box 2100, Adelaide, SA 5001, Australia.

We report the results of a study of the interaction between torsion and the low frequency out-of-plane silyl wag vibration in the ground, S, and excited, S, electronic states of phenylsilane. These studies follow the observation of interactions between methyl torsion and the out-of-plane methyl wagging vibration in toluene, several fluoro-substituted toluenes and -methylpyrrole. The interaction leads to various spectroscopic constants becoming divorced from their usual physical meaning.

Based on the DCV-C system of fullerene acceptor organic solar cell active materials, the charge transfer process of D-A type molecular materials under the action of an external electric field () was explored. Within the range of electric field application, the excited state characteristics exhibit certain regular changes. Based on reducing the excitation energy, the excitation mode shows a trend of developing toward low excited states.

On the heels of the continuous development of optical fiber sensing technology, optical fiber sensors based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) have attracted widespread attention. Herein, an SPR sensor based on the six nested anti-resonant fiber (ARF) is designed and analyzed by the finite element method (FEM). All the structural parameters are optimized to achieve high-sensitivity liquid refractive index detection.

A symmetrical dual-D and dual-core single-mode fiber surface plasmon resonance (SPR) liquid sensor is designed for biological detection. The dual-core design optimizes the transmission path, improves the momentum matching between free electrons and photons, and facilitates bidirectional coupling, consequently amplifying the SPR effect and enabling sensitive monitoring of the refractive index changes of biological solutions. In this structure, a gold wire is placed in the middle of the polished surface of the double-D-shaped single-mode fiber (SMF) to produce high-quality free electrons and promote the mode-coupling excitation of the SPR effect.
