The dosimetry for the triage of personnel encountering a criticality accident was investigated. The JCO criticality accident of 1999 was selected as a case study, and attention was paid to the identification and the segregation of severely exposed personnel. A series of Monte Carlo calculations revealed that simplified equations proposed by ANSI to estimate dose with respect to distance work well to determine the region of interest for triage.

Qualitative research on clinical risk perception in Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

December 2024

PhD, Department of Life Sciences and Public Health - Section of Hygiene, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Rome, Italy Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS, Rome, Italy.

Background: the Pediatric Intensive Care field is characterized by the criticality of newborns and children who access it, as well as by a high complexity of care. This entails the need of an optimal integration between the various professional figures working in Pediatric Intensive Care Units (PICUs) and their ability to work in team.

Purpose: to describe how nurses perceive clinical risk and relate to it; to identify adverse events and related risk factors.

We investigated the neutron dose estimation for the triage of personnel involved in criticality accidents by conducting 24Na measurements via the whole-body measurement method. For a case study, we examined the September 1999 Japan Nuclear Fuel Conversion Co. criticality accident (internationally known as "the Tokaimura accident").

Designing an effective takeover request (TOR) in conditionally automated vehicles is crucial to ensure driving safety when the system reaches its limit. In our study, we aimed to investigate the effects of looming tactile TORs (whose urgency is dynamically mapped to the situation's criticality as the vehicle approaches the upcoming obstacle) on takeover performance and subjective experience compared with conventional non-looming TORs (several tactile pulses with consistent inter-pulse intervals). In addition, the impact of the TOR urgency level (with urgency levels matched or unmatched to the situation's criticality) was considered.

Using archival peripheral blood slides from radiation accident patients, we have recently described the pseudo-Pelger Huët anomaly (PPHA) in neutrophils as a new radiation-induced biomarker, useful for dosimetry not only immediately after a radiation incident but also potentially helpful as a tool in retrospective dosimetry. In conjunction with the Radiation Accident Registry at the Radiation Emergency Assistance Center/Training Site (REAC/TS), the frequency of PPHA cells has been compared from selected patients in the Y-12 criticality accident in Oak Ridge, TN, in 1958 and from the patient in the 1971 60 Co accident at the USAEC Comparative Animal Research Laboratory (CARL), also in Oak Ridge. Patients A, C, and D in the Y-12 accident are described as having an average dose of 2.

Human error constitutes one of the primary causes of accidents, particularly in the context of loading and unloading operations involving road trucks, especially those carrying petroleum products. The process of identifying and evaluating human errors within these operations involves several key steps. Initially, all sub-tasks associated with loading and unloading are meticulously identified and analyzed utilizing Hierarchical Task Analysis (HTA), achieved through direct observation, document examination, and interviews.
