Six undescribed lavandulylated flavonoids (1-6) were isolated from the roots of Sophora flavescens. Remarkably, compounds 1 and 2, which were composed of a flavane unit and a phloroglucinol unit, were the first reported dimers. Compounds 3 and 4 were the first reported neoflavonoids with lavandulyl units. Compounds 5 and 6 were chalcone with oxidized lavandulyl units. Their structures were fully characterized by cumulative analyses of UV, IR, HRESIMS, NMR and ECD spectroscopic data, along with computational calculations through density functional theory. Compounds 1 and 2 showed significant protein tyrosine phosphatase-1B inhibitory activities with IC values of 2.669 and 3.596 μM, respectively.

Polyprenylated benzoylphloroglucinols (PPBPs) make up a group of complex natural products with anticancer potentials that are mainly distributed in plants. As part of our intensive exploration on new bioactive substances from this genus, we report two undescribed PPBPs, picrorhizones I () and J (), along with four known analogues (-) from the stem bark of and . The new structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analysis, particularly 1D and 2D NMR and HRESIMS, whereas the absolute configurations were determined by a combination of ECD and NMR calculations coupled with a DP4+ probability analysis.

Electronic address:

Garciyunnanones A-R (1-18), eighteen undescribed caged polycyclic polyprenylated acylphloroglucinols, two undescribed biogenetic congeners (19-20), and nineteen known analogues (21-39), were isolated from the stem barks of Garcinia yunnanensis Hu. All of these isolates are decorated with a C-5 lavandulyl substituent. Their structures and absolute configurations were confirmed by HRESIMS, 1D & 2D NMR spectroscopic analysis, quantum chemical calculations of electronic circular dichroism data, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

Seven undescribed lavandulyl benzophenones garcimultiflorones K-Q, and fourteen known compounds were isolated from the CHCl soluble fraction of 95% EtOH extract of Garcinia multiflora branches. Their structures and absolute configurations were determined by spectroscopic techniques including NMR spectroscopy, MS analysis, and ECD calculations. Seven isolated compounds expect for garcimultiflorone L and garcimultiflorone O exhibited cytotoxic activities in vitro against five cancer cell lines (HL-60, A549, SMMC-7721, MCF-7, and SW480).

Sex pheromone of the pink hibiscus mealybug, Maconellicoccus hirsutus, contains an unusual cyclobutanoid monoterpene.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

June 2004

Chemicals Affecting Insect Behavior Laboratory, Beltsville Agriculture Research Center West, Agricultural Research Service, United States Department of Agriculture, Beltsville, MD 20705, USA.

Two compounds that together constitute the female sex pheromone of the pink hibiscus mealybug (PHM), Maconellicoccus hirsutus, were isolated, identified, and synthesized. They are (R)-2-isopropenyl-5-methyl-4-hexenyl (S)-2-methylbutanoate [common name is (R)-lavandulyl (S)-2-methylbutanoate] and [(R)-2,2-dimethyl-3-(1-methylethylidene)cyclobutyl]methyl (S)-2-methylbutanoate [which we refer to as (R)-maconelliyl (S)-2-methylbutanoate]. Maconelliol is an unusual cyclobutanoid monoterpene, and its structure has been established by enantioselective synthesis from precursors of known structure and configuration.
