Iron dyshomeostasis and neuroinflammation, characteristic features of the aged brain, and exacerbated in neurodegenerative disease, may induce oxidative stress-mediated neurodegeneration. In this study, the effects of potential priming with mild systemic iron injections on subsequent lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation in adult C57Bl/6J mice were examined. After cognitive testing, regional brain tissues were dissected for iron (metal) measurements by total reflection X-ray fluorescence and synchrotron radiation X-Ray fluorescence-based elemental mapping; and iron regulatory, ferroptosis-related, and glia-specific protein analysis, and lipid peroxidation by western blotting.

Noise-induced hearing loss affects roughly 430 million people worldwide. Current treatment options often require invasive medical procedures, and to date, there are no FDA-approved drug therapies. While the causes can be diverse, noise induced hearing loss is unequivocally associated with oxidative stress and inflammation, and subsequent damage to the inner ear structures.

In this review, we discuss the possibility and feasibility of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) as a therapeutic target to minimize the devastating effects of a brain injury. To complete this review, comprehensive literature searches were conducted in MEDLINE, PubMed, Embase, and PsycINFO databases for English scientific peer-reviewed articles through December 2022. This short review addressed the different sources of oxidative stress and its effects on blood-brain barrier (BBB) dysfunction, mitochondrial damage, and changes in a variety of inflammatory molecules associated with central nervous system (CNS) injury.

Background: Neuregulin-1 (NRG-1) is a stress-mediated transmembrane growth factor. Reduced myocardial damage and higher NRG-1 levels upon treatment with remote ischemic conditioning (RIC) has been described in rats. However, the role of NRG-1 in patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI) is unknown.
